13B Swap mounting - No SE cover
Hey Guys,
I was reading a thread a while ago, that i can no longer find, that its possiable to instead of using a front mount GSL-SE front cover to mount a 13b, you can simply weld the 12a mounting bracket directly to the 13b Front cover. After modifying the bracket to make the arms longer, aparently it fits no problem. This way you can use the stock OMP as well. Is this possiable, also i just bought a 130 AMP MIG would this be sufficient? Any potential draw backs to this method? I suppose that you would no longer need the SE oil pan either then? Thanks, Matt.

Huh?
The SE front cover is needed so you can....
1.Mount the engine.
2.Mount the SE oilpan(to clear the crossmember below)
3.Mount the 4 tube OMP which is used by all 84-88 13B's.
First off,if I understand you correctly.......you cant weld the steel front mount to the aluminum front cover.Steel wont weld to aluminum and vice-verse.
MIG welders are great tools, but they are for welding steel for the most part.Aluminum MIG welding can be done with the right ad-ons but it usually sucks and can be difficult.TIG welders work awesome on aluminum, but cost quite a bit more and require more skill to do well.
The SE oilpan is neccesary if your installing a 2nd gen 13B.Theres no getting around it.
The SE front cover isnt absolutely neccesary, you can use a 12A front cover....but the 2nd gen OMP wont bolt to it and the 2nd gen 13B needs a 4 tube OMP....the 12A OMP is 2 tube.(pre-mix is a viable option with a 12A cover)
Any 1st gen front mount bar will work.If the holes dont line up at the mounts, you can just notch them a little to fit,or buy the correct 13B right side rubber mount.
For the future, might I recommend you specify when you are talking about the SE 13B and the FC(2nd gen) 13B.......they might both be 13B engines, but they have LOTS of differences.
