12a won’t start
I recently bought a 85 gls rx7. car hasn’t been started since 2014. Previous owner said that the carb needed to be rebuilt. It’s pretty much all stock except for the new nikki carb i put on it. After i checked for spark i drained old gas out and put new in. I can see that gas goes into the carburetor when i press the petal. It does crank and smokes out the back. When i turn the key i can hear the fuel pump kick on. After cranking for about 3 seconds there is a sound that i wanna say is like a clunking but i’m not sure. Any ideas? I attached a video of the sound.

When I got the car back over the summer I changed the battery to a new one. After about a month I realized that the battery died bought a charger and been using that. Tomorrow I'm gonna try using a jump pack and see if that changes anything. The timing is good i think i can check tomorrow
update: I used the jump pack until it died, clunking sound is still there. Did a compression test and it was in the 60 range is this because it was sitting for a while and wasn't started in a while or does the engine need a rebuild?
update: checked distributer wiring and it was mixed up. Put it how it was supposed to be and pretty sure the sound went away waiting for the jump pack to charge again then gonna try to start.

Rotary Fan
The FSM 9field service manual) available from foxed.ca has fuel flow test. Spark can be verified fairly easily. A strong battery is vital when starting is an issue.
Practcally speaking, if there is fuel squirting from the air horn when pressing on the accelerator, the plugs are firing and timing is anywhere near right it will start. Adequate compression is the other variable/ A couple ounces of 2 cycle oil in the venturi will generally give you a temporary increase in compression. Fresh plugs and a strong battery can not be over emphasized..

when I press the petal I can see gas going into the carb. Just tried to start again and not enough juice in the battery. died out after about 45 seconds of cranking. The battery only charged for about an hour so I'm gonna go back out before dark and try again hopefully the battery will be charged more. after the battery was just about dead the car started buzzing. not sure what this means I'm guising because the battery is dead. That clunking sound is gone now that I fixed the timing which is a good. If I don't get it running tonight I'm gonna try tomorrow with the battery fully charged. Thank you for the help/advice I appreciate it.

Update: It Runs!!!
poured a little 2 stroke in the carbonator and with a few pumps of the throttle it started. I let it idle for 5ish mins then shut it because i was getting a buzzing sound that I'm guessing meant that the coolant was low because the light was on too. I already have a new radiator to put in which I'm gonna try to do this weekend. After it idled i looked at the exhaust and a lot of smoke was coming out probably from the 2 stroke oil. I also noticed a few drops of what looked like coolant come out of the exhaust it was only a few drops but after i replace the old radiator and put some fluid in ill know if its a bad coolant seal right?
