Angry 12a streetport racing beat holley set up need help!

I got an 83' street port 12a, a racing beat holley carb and intake setup, carter 7psi fuel pump. Car starts with a rough idle, and after a minute of running it at ~1000rpm the exaust header is glowing red already! I thought the racing beat carbs were factory pre-set. Might this problem be because of too much fuel pressure or am I missing something?

Please Help!

the e-shafts/leading ignition pulley mark is lined up with the pin on the front plate, and the distributor gear mark's are right,so it shouldnt have that many problems from just being at top dead center for the initial break-in? or am i just being retarded.

If i set it any richer it dies, choak and idle mix both kill it when its richer.

it's all new and supposed to be somwhat pre-set,could it be the 7psi of fuel the pump is putting out? the regulator i have doesn't seem to be working, the fuel press. gauge is allways @ 7psi,and and i double checked the float levels,WTF!

Check for vacuum leaks.

7psi may be a bit high, but even so your manifold wouldn't glow from an over rich condition.

i know there is no vacuum leaks,i've re-torqued carb& manifold and everything else checks out as far as vacuum. i kinda dont want to run it for more than 45 sec. to a min. it really glows. i thought that the header would'nt glow unless it was running at like 5 grand for 10 min. or so. the factory intake is for some reason easier for me,this thing just does'nt sound right

No timing light available, but i have the engine running a few degrees advanced- any lower and it won't run. that exaust manifold is scary how quick it heats up. Is it possible that the carb is f'ed?

Both of them are mad glowing- i can easily feel the heat a few feet from the engine bay. smelled like my exaust was starting on fire last time i had it running over a minute.

yea, triple check for spark... especially the leading like child said. and i swear, you gotta be a tooth retarded maybe. the car shoudl easily idle/ run at full retard/advance if on the correct tooth. if you really are good there, then it's the carb.

i had the same problem exactly, if you were to change any setting on the carb it died but if i moved the distributor any it died. i ended up changing the idle some, and also after changing the idle i had to move the timing. mine ended up being just barly advanced im talking one tooth. the distributor can move one tooth at a time and one tooth makes all the difference. with it being off slightly it does not burn all the fuel and with to uch fuel at the same time you end up getting a lot blowed in to the header adn it ignites there cause it to turn red. so i reccomend chaning the idle a little adn then your timeing.

yep, restab that dizzy again. lol! if compression on the motor is good, then timing has got to be whack.

I think RB recommends advancing the leading 3 degrees and advance the trailing 17 degrees on a SP at idle. You may want to call them to check it out. This is what I have mine set on and it runs great.

Cool will definetly have to check that out. Need to pull the engine again because the front plate is leaking oil.
