I've searched and read, but have seen vague and sometimes conflicting info. Can I use the starter from my '85 12A on the S5 13B I'm putting in it?

As far as I know they're interchangeable. The only compatibility issue I know of is that auto trans have different pinion teeth (11 instead of 14) so i guess they also have a different ring gear. Last month I put 3 starters in: 2 12As and a 13B and they were all the same. Same partno. for 12A and 13B. As it happens, the 13A I installed was taken from a 12A. Well, I'm convinced they're the same.
