12a running rough

I am a new rx7 owner..I have recently purchased an 85 rx7 with 109,000 miles on it..It does not smoke..The original owner put a Chevy 2 barrel on it and when i bought it it ran but not good..I have played with it and so far a have it running pretty good but it lacks power..Timing is right on plugs are good.. I did notice that he had the L2 and T2 plug wires on trailing on bottom and leading on top and for the first rotor the opposite ..is this right..Right now i get a gas smell from the exhaust and while i'm driving but no leaks..Under 2000 rpm it bogs and runs rough but over 2000 it is smooth...Any ideas? I'm thinking of putting the original carb back on since he gave me it.

No, trailing should be on top with leading on bottom. That could be why it's bogging.

Bizarre. T1 goes to the top plug of the forward rotor, L2 to the bottom plug of the rear rotor, etc, provided he was still running stock ignition. Get those hooked up right, then grab a decent inductive timing light and set the timing correctly.
Your gas smell in the exhaust could indicate running way rich- are you seeing any black soot in the exhaust?

Thread hijack: My RB muffler isn't even two months old and the tips are completely black. If I run the car any leaner, it throws a temper tantrum. Time for a rebuild of the carb huh?

rvertalics,

You were lucky to get the car running at all. Some clown must have messed up your ignition.

Just remember: "L" = Leading = Lower; "T" = Trailing = Top

Just a quick question...How long can i expect this motor to run without needing major work? It has 109,000 on it now and as far as the previous owner could tell me i am the third owner and have every receipt that he and the original owner had. It appears that the had it serviced regularly.I plan on taking very good care of it since it is in really good condition with no rot on the body and new paint.. Just wondering how long she'll go before i have to rebuild or something major goes wrong..

I've seen 200k -300k on this site.

But I think your missing half the fun if you don't take it apart and see why it's working.

im at 155k on the original 12A and still running strong. These things can easily go to 200k and even 300k if taken care of properly
