12a rotor swap

ok i am new to rotary engines. not new to cars, nor forums. i have searched for a answer but cant find what im looking for.

ok here is the back ground.i'm looking to get a 1st gen rx7 to replace my jza70- supra, i found a guy with a 12a engine that needs a rebuilt and missing a rear rotor. i have seen it and looks in ok shape. so my question is can i buy a rotor off ebay for a 12a, and use it in this 12a? i have a parts cleaner in shop at work that i can use,all i would need to resurface the housings and get a rebuilt kit.

also what rebuilt kit do u guys recomend and whats some decent apex seals that i can get for a fairly good price.

there are 2 years of rotors for the first gen ones from 79-82 and 83-85. The answer is yes you can get replacement ones. since your a noob here and I feel like being nice heres some sites..

Mazdatrix.com
racingbeat.com
atkinsrotary.com (cheaper rebuild kits, good quality though)

oh and welcome to the wankel

BTW if it makes a difference I"ll be using atkins' stuff

Since my 12A had 150k miles on it when the brittle coolant seals went. I am going with the $900 one from them, which includes bearings and pretty much everything. My bearings are fine but the way I see, do it all once now get it over with. You could get away with just the soft seals and rotor stuff prolly though or the $500 or whatever kit. If you really want to rebuild call atkins and ask them what they think.

Also regarding the felpro stuff.. The price on ebay is roughly the same as what any other kit is. Never used felpro on the rotary so I don't really know how their stuff works in our application.

Housings can't be resufaced. They are chrome coated, when the become scarred and flake badly then they are scrap. Now there are companies that have a coating process. Do some searches. Slightly scarred housing are reuseable. See this link, http://www.mazdatrix.com/FAQ/ROTORHSG.HTM

Also I would stay away from ebay stuff. Get the kit from atkins or other reputable rotary engine supplier. Mazdatrix is a great company but a little $$.

Good luck.

You need the rotor for the right Series of engine and the correct weight. Each rotor has a letter stamp on it that designates it's weight range. Stay within one letter. Letters range from A-E You will find the letter on the gear side of the rotor iirc. The 12a's also have front and rear rotors, which all of the later engines do not. The F or R is stamped in the compression 'bathtub'.
