Is The 12A Rotary Engine a single or a two rotar engine?
It's a stupid question, i know... but a friend of mine claims that the 12A is a two Rotar engine like the 13B, but i have always been taught different. I thought I would ask those of you who do it every day.
and if it is a single rotar engine, how did my friend pull a two rotar engine that said 12A on the housings???
Please help me clear this up.

FC3S the 12A is a two rotor engine. the overall dimensions between the 12A and the 13B are approx 20mm different due to the wider rotor housings on the 13B. The wider housings allowed for a broader torque band, and higher power output...

Both the 12a and the 13b engines have two rotors, just the rotors in the 13b are 10mm wider than the ones in the 12a.
There were no cars that I know of that had single-rotor engines. The different names (12A, 13B) come from the amount of displacement they have. 12A has roughly 1.2 Litres of displacement (actually it's 1.145 but they rounded wrong) and the 13b has 1.3L of displacement.
and because English is such an odd language:
A Rotor - the physical thing
The Rotary Engine - the type
But nobody knows that at first.

Note: toxic_d, mostly right... the rotor housings were made wider, because the rotors themselves were also made wider!
10mm each, or 20mm total for the engine.
MrFC3S, I suggest you check out www.rotaryengineillustrated.com and www.howstuffworks.com to get some more info . You can also get some great info in the FAQ.

ok, thanks guys, i feel stupid because the place that i got that information was from a game that almost 85% of the fourm members know, GT2. In the specs it said that the engine in the 1st Gen RX-7's were single rotar engines...(damn misinformed Game that I love)
thanks anyway, and ill look out for any 4cyl DOHC 12A's too...

Is the Spider the one that had the single rotor in the back? I remember reading in one of my books that the protype had the single rotor lying flat inside the spare tire well of the trunk.

it had a single rotor engine, but it wasn't laying flat. It was in the back though. Fun little car, and a masterpiece of engineering. It served mainly as a testmule for NSU, and now it's worth quite some money if you can find a good one.

scroll down to see the powerplant of the Spider (KKM 502, about 500cc, 50hp, 71nm) along with some other NSU engines.

i doubt that you got the info from any of the gran turismos, they keep very accurate when it comes to their cars info ie.drive wheels, engine(type and displacement), stock power and so on . hell gt2 even has the 83 '12a turbo sa22c and the 3 rotor cosmos idk if they had the rx-3 or rx-5, but they very well may have em in gt4

Since you had to ask, this is what a single rotor engine looks like in a 1st gen. It's like a JC Cosmo engine bay with a 13B in it. Lynn E. Hanover originally posted this on nopistions.

Dammit, I wanna check that in GT2 (stopped playing the game before rotary fever REALLY hit me hard, didn't even know they had First gens in the game!) but the damn car won't show up in the used shop. Now I'm sad

you have to win the 83 12at in GT2, I forget how cause I was never able to get it. I've read a few game sits that say every so often it will pop into the used shop, but be gone just as fast.
and holy crap that one rotor is the smallest engine ever!!

Gran Tourismo 3 I believe had some stuff wrong.
"full" intake and exhaust porting nets you something like thirty hp! It really handicaps the rotaries in that game because you can't do any of the piston-related mods (obviously.. they were smart enough to figure that out) but they don't have any rotary-specific mods, and they don't let the one HUGE mod (porting) do what it's supposed to!

agreed, GT3 wasn't nearly as good as I thought it would be. GT4 *could* be good, but they're rushing it to market and cutting a few things from it. I like Auto Modelista better personally...

I remember buying the turbo savannah, now that I think about it. I'll have to check my old files.
ANd, yeah, it does make me mad that you can't PORT the rotary right
Someday they'll respect rotaries right. In 4 there is an 85 Special Edition, which I would imagine is an SE. . . .. still no 12A confirmed though.
