12a dry weight

Hey All,,say a person was going to pull out the rotary
for overhual, drained the oil, water, unbolted the exhuast,
and intake, along with the transmission.so it's just the
core,,rotor hauseings/rotors,oil pan,water pump,how
heavy is it ?? can one person lift it up and out ??
of course the hood is removed too,, or is it easier to use
as cherry picker and leave the transmission on..because
i'm thinking,,,pull the engine, leave the trans blocked up
onder the car,,i don't know the weights,,,dry,,,
i hope i made this understandable,,,,thanks

Trust me... NO... I was able to carry my bare 12A down the stairs (it's only some housings bolted together - no innards ) but I still needed help getting it in and out of the hatch.

Pulling the engine means a 3foot or so deadlift UP. If you can deadlift ~300+lb, when the weight is 3 feet away from you, sure go for it!

It's that heavy ??? 300lbs or so,,ok,now i know..
thats pretty lite,i guess,for a 100 hp engine 12a vs a 100hp resipracating engine,,or is that a close call, on the two

Well a 100hp four-banger will probably weigh quite a bit less because most engines of that power/size are all-aluminum.

I mean engines like Saturn 1.9l, Civic 1.6l, etc. Engines that DON'T double as an anvil

Sheez I can straight-arm a Saturn block... that thing must weigh 30 pounds!

I'm approaching a 450lb deadlift. But I bet an engine is much more awkward than a bar and plates. I'd use a cherry picker or something. Imagine the damage that could be done if you dropped it.

The most accurate data I have found is from a section dealing with the deveopment of the Turbo II

" at 171kg [376.2lbs] it was only 18kg [39.6 lbs] heavier than its 146bhp counterpart."

These are Gen 2 engines which were marginally basically lighter than the 135 bhp 13B of the gsl. se

Thus, the enine weights appear to be in the order of:

12A 1980 342 lbs
13B 1984 344 lbs
13B 1986 336.4 lbs
13BT 1988 376.2 lbs

I think the small difference between the two 1984 engines is due to the oil cooler being included in the 12A weights.

The '86 and later engines used an aluminum water pump. The pulley section was cast iron which is opposite of the '85 and older units. In all, it helped to lower the engine weight.

Anyone wanna help me lift this one ?

Chrysler M4 tank engine 5,244 (87) 30 cyl, 5 banks of 6, flathead, WWII

I have been there, I was like that little cant weigh that much,. LOL Try again, thats a heavy bastard to get out of the car w/o a hoist or picker. What I did on the first one, was jack the car way up, and put a chain on each hanger and lift it via a pipe and 2 people slowly to ground and then remove it from under the car. When putting it back in I decided I needed to break down and buy the proper equip.

I thought one of the rotaries main advantages over piston engines is the weight advantage. If the the 105hp 12A weighs 260 pounds, what kind of advantage is that?!

Its a compact engine and can fit snugglely behind the front wheels center? Thus the near 50/50 weight ratio.

All I know is, I can deadlift a 12a block(short block alone)only for the engine clamped together with the tension bolts, nothing else bolted on it. I can lift it a flight of stairs from the basement and bend at the knees to put it down. It does suck to do though obviously.

The key is to have a THICK long sleave shirt, gloves and hold it as close to your body as possible, and keep your back straight up ofcourse. Some people maybe too small to attempt this. But I ONLY weigh 178lbs, and am 6'2", pretty thin but still plenty of muscle power to do this every rebuild.

I had a 12a with 5-speed tranny shipped and it tipped the scales at 548 lbs with the pallet.
