12a cold start problems
My problem is simple my engine has a hard time starting up when its cold. Typically when I start my car in the morning it'll fire for about 2 sec and then die even if I try to coach it, then either the same thing will happen again or it will flood, in fact I've unflooded that car so many times since I've owned it I could probably do it at a red light. When I crank it it will usually smoke while the engine turns over. When I do get it running while my foot's on the gas I then have to find the perfect length of the choke **** or else it will die the second i let off the gas. if its warm it starts right up, and the idle is remarkably smooth for a carb. Today I started it after about 20 cranks (I'm amazed the starter is still hanging in there) and its 78 degrees outside so I know its not the temp. Before the car had the worst idle you'd ever hear, rough, 300-500 rpm but it started no problem until I adjusted the idle speed and A/F screw and now I have this problem.

The timing should be fine, since it runs good once it's warm, but it wouldn't hurt to check it anyway. I think it might be time to rebuild the carb, take the air cleaner lid off and let the car idle for a bit, when you shut it off look down the carb and see if fuel is still dripping/pouring in, if it is then rebuild the carb.
I don't know how you've been de-flooding your engine, but if you wire in a on/off switch for the fuel pump then you should never have problems with it again. If the car floods, just turn the pump off.

Turns out the gas guage broke and was running on fumes, and when I thought it was flooded it was just excess oil that came from the metering pump that was misting out of the spark plug holes. Talk about being stupid
