12A Brakes and Rotors

I was browsing brake and rotor vendors online for my 84 GS found that tirerack had pretty decent prices. I was surprised because the rotors they are advertising are cheaper than what Advance Auto Parts and Auto Zone had them for.

http://www.tirerack.com/brakes/resul...&oEvent=event4

Rotors for $41 is cheap as I was only about to find them for $58 at Autozone.

Also, anyone know a better/cheaper place to get HP+ and Hawk Blue pads?

Should I consider tirerack.com at all or are those rotors crap?

Rotor quality. First of all, anyone that skimps on brake should not drive a Rx7. When looking for brake rotors you need to factor in the following criteria.
1). Is the replacement rotor equivelent to OEM. Meaning does it have the same amount of cooling vanes? What type of steel is it made of?
Brake parts are not all the same and are one of the parts on our cars that should not be comprimised if you are going to do spirited driving.
If you just drive the car normally then getting a lower quality rotor or pad is not an issue.

OK, that makes scense and I want to make sure my car is the safest since it'll be used for autocross and track days. I am not trying to skimp, I'm trying to smart and thrifty.

I'm assuming the autozone or advance rotors are the "cheap" one, but I would have thought that the tirerack ones would be of better quality. They are the brembo replacement rotors. That's what surprised me since they didn't cost very much. I'll have to call them I guess and ask how many cooling vanes they have.

Brembo rotors are good quality rotors. When you call them do not ask how many cooling vanes they have instead ask them if they have the same amount of vanes as the factory ones do.

And brake rotors are not expensive to make. It's all based on the car and how many were made that dictates price.

And make sure they are brembo rotors because that is below wholesale for that car. They should sell for around $58-$65 apiece for front brembo rotors.

I just got these rotors. Excellent price and they came pretty quick. They have exactly the same vanes as the stock rotor. I can post pictures if anyone wants. I'd recommend them. I'll install them after I come back from CMP this weekend.

***Brembo rotors are good quality rotors. When you call them do not ask how many cooling vanes they have instead ask them if they have the same amount of vanes as the factory ones do.***

The Brembo rotors I bought a year ago for a 1st gen RX-7 did not have vanes. They have a bunch of pillars instead of vanes. Check the Brembo site.

The Brembo front rotors I bought a year ago cost $31.00 each.

Now a short story about Brembo rotors. There are rotors out there in Brembo boxs that are not Brembo rotors. Ask me how I know. I had a conversation with a guy at the Brembo corp. offices because the first Brembo rotors I bought didn't have the pillar vane as per the spec on their site.

I've never used Hawks so I don't know how they compare but I stand by Carbotech pads. I haven't driven my GSL enough with them to give you any RX-7 specific advice but I love them on my Sentra. In comparison, the Sentra is a big heavy pig. I've had both the Panthers and now the Bobcats. If you are using your GS as a daily I'd recommend the Bobcats. If it's just for autox and track go with the Panthers. Be warned tho, the Panthers are heavy on the dusting.

I can't find the site that I used for the rotors, it must be at work.
