Question 12A to a 13B will it work?

Hey all,

I know some of you guys are saying "Man... will this guy ever stop asking questions?" by now, but here is another...

I friend of mine told me about a GSL-SE he saw at the local FordLand. I went to check it out. They want 200 bucks for it!

What happened was this: some guy brought it in and had it looked at (blown motor) but he never came back to pay his bill or pick up the car. Now, Maine state law says that if it is sitting for more than 30 days without being collected, the dealership is allowed to sell it for the price of the bill ($200)

Well, in a couple of days, it could be mine. It has high mileage on the motor (128k) so I assume the apex seals are bad. Is it worth buying this thing for 200 just to find the motor cannot be repaired?

Also, assuming that I buy it and fix the engine, can I drop the engine and tranny into my 83 gsl? The 13B is FI and it is a faster motor.

Any ideas?

Oh yeah, the body of the car is okay shape. It has a few dents here and there. interior seems to be fine.

A blown motor is tough. You'll end up spending a ton more getting that fixed. But other things to consider are the suspension components. The larger wheels, vented rear disks, stuffer components....etc. may be well worth the $200 as long as you are doing the parts swapping. But a few hundred more, and you could find a running car. Mine cost me $500.

I don't know if emissions testing is an issue for you. But placing the 13B into the '83 GSL will mean you'll have to pass emissions as an 84-85 -SE.

The tranny's are almost identical.

And that 12A you have isn't all that shabby with a few mods.

Ok, let me re-word that...

Can you hook up a 13B into a 83 gsl? If so, what kind of alterations am I looking at here? Does is fit size wise? How about the harnesses? And, since it is FI, what else do I have to do?

I don't have to worry about emmissions YET, but if the new laws pass, my car will be exempt in 2 years due to its age...

How about the tranny? Is it worth anything? It's a 5 speed stick with a ok clutch...

I know a 12A is nice... but I want FI! Plus, since the engine is "blown" (all I know is that it won't start) I might as well get in there and learn while I go... is apex seal replacing REALLY hard? I am VERY mechanically inclined, so I'd like to tackle the job myself...

Any comments?

You never know if the motor is blown till ya do a compression check. It could be as simple as it couldn't hold an idle, the dealership said he'd need a new motor and he'd say F#W@ that! So buy it and see if you can work out the kinks. Low milage chassis is niiiiice.

What do you mean low mileage? The 85 has 128k on it... or do you mean my 65k on an 83?

just wondering...

Yeah, I thought about that possibility, so this is why I am anxious to get it out of the yard... (haven't rtied to do anything with it, because it is still their's and it is at the dealership)
