All I have to say is go radar somebody N.A.R.C cause that is who you would have to be, youre obviously on the wrong website.
Now...
When you're hitting this magic 100mph, 5k rpm limit... is it smooth, or does it cutoff like it's hitting a wall? Is there any stumbling, etc?
Is your car generally slow through all the gears, at all speeds, rpms, or just in 5th gear at high speed?
More description would help people point out potential problems.
I'd point out some obvious ideas, like have a look at your fuel supply, bad fuel pumps apparently feel like hitting a wall at high loads like 5th gear. Make sure your exhaust isn't clogged, your ignition is up to spec, etc....

I just realized this, but you said that you put a 2nd gen motor in you car with 1,700 miles on it. You shouldn't try to push a motor that isn't broke in yet that hard. The break in period directly efects how the engine will run for the rest of it's life. Also break in period is about 2,000 miles or better, you shouldn't run it that hard when it is that new.

Been there, done that, quit crying about the paragraphs, far as mike goes, if he's the man and has respect, and is real behind the wheel, fine then he has my respect too, 100k, I was being sarcastic, sorry if you missed it, and as far as my car goes, you don't want whats in the garrage, and we will leave that at that. I am not here to impress anyone, just want some tech sup on this !st gen. Oh, and I may be a noob to this site, but i've been on the streets, since some of guys where still wet'n sheets, no disrespect, just the time line. That's all for now.
Well, the engine wasn't completely brand new, it was puzzled together from different ones, you know how we do it. Some parts where new, I think one rotor, and the center housing. So a true breakin period wasn't needed, or so I was told. They said it only needed about 500-1000 miles. I didn't feel comf. with that, so I took it to 1400-1500. Untill then, I never went over 4'5 rpms.
It runs clean through all the gears, no stuttering, or anything like that. I am using a Sheraco, however you spell it, fuel pump. Off an old VW Carado. That's what they had me pull for it, I went through three stock, Borg Werner pumps in about a week. We didn't think they all could have been bad from the factory, so they had me pull one from a junk yard. I do know that the tank is clean. It just hits a wall at 5k rpms in 5th gear, at 7k in fourth I am at 80 mph, I thought that was a bit low.
Oh, and for the speed on the street thing, you guys are right. In the city, or common traffic zones, I do the speed of traffic, i'm not a soccer mom, but i'm no bat out of hell either. However, where I live now there are several back highways that are no longer used, some have 7-9 mile straights. Now you know as well as I do that if you had this in your back yard you would, not every day, but every once and a while like to open it up for a mile or two. Yes, vissabillity in these areas is very good due to the topographical layout.
O.k. I do think that my cats are going. Sometimes I can tell by a change in the pitch. It has more or less rumble, or scream, and the fact that I can hear them rattling around. This is my first time dealing with breaking a motor in, all my others where preowned cars, so it was never an issue. This car was basicly a junk yard salvage. At the time, it wasn't even going to be a street car, or daily driver. So problems with it weren't really that bad because I would just park it walk away and come back when I had the money our patiance. However that is nolonger the case, so I have to get it going. You know the drill.

I thought the break in period was more for the seals to seat properly? So even if the parts are used, you still need a proper break in period for the seals to seat and build compression and what not. Although, it does sound like you did a decent job with breaking it in. I would check that the 6th ports are actually working right.

Yeah, i've felt the exhaust before, it felt fine, but the problem is it seems like the cats, or the comb, if you will, have broken loose partially, and they may be shifting from time to time. As far as the timeing goes, i'll be honest, I don't know how to check it,,, ,,, unless it's the same as checking it on the 83" 12A. Line up the marks on the pullies, and check the arrow inside the distributor. I had my headers glowing red hot before on the 83"

O.K. but will hollowing out the cats have any effect on my ports, specificly 5&6, you know, lesser back pressure, and will that effect my, "torque" in any way. Not that i'm crying, because beggers can't be choosers, just want to know, what I need to know. I'm using 20 50w oil, what's your opinion on oil, and my break-in period, previously posted. Thanks for the reply.
Mike-P-28, RE. lighter flywheel, when you swithced, did you lose any top end, not considering your other mods. Just curious, testing a friends theory.

Okay, I'll throw my two-cents in.
My SA won't beat a 5.0 Mustang, but my RX4 used to eat them for lunch, at least in a straight line.
And RX7s are usually as fast in 4th gear as they are in 5th. It's pretty hard to get them to spool up all the way in 5th due to the gearing.

I understand that the car will excell slower in fifthe gear, hell if I didn't know that,,, ,,, we won't go there again, any-ways, it just stops at 5k in fifth, I even feel some loss of power, and my 94" v6 3.4 liter crapamaro, will do 100 in fourth if I get the launch right, hell, ive hit the damn gov, in fourth before, and that's 110. So I know the Rx should have more than that, at least it better. On second thought, I know it should because i've raced a couple of 1st gens. in my camaro before, they got me, and they were pretty close to stock. I had a few out of the whole shot, but they got me in third, while the camaro has to switch from 2nd to third, and is half way through third, the Rx is just getting into third. Not that I mind, lets not forget, I too am an RX fiend, and if my daily driver beat my baby, I wouldn't be to pleased.
Oh, and thanks on the Mustank thing. What gets me the most is that these guys go around beating stock Rx 1st gens. and civics with Cobra's and Saleen's and then go off bragging about how they beat some Import. When we all know what would happen if they got up against a equally invested 3rd Gen, Supra, or NSX, you know something in there class.

Tennis, anyone
I use a 20-50 oil. I feel a thicker oil to start with, will not
get as beat up as fast as a thin oil. i've got lots of miles
on the clock, so thicker takes up the clearances due to
wear. And me,,i;m a 82 stock, all i've done is a new hp
clutch and a bonez hi-flow cat. and i stay on-it about
engine care. I go right after 3rd gens, supra's, 5.0's
whatever...and most don't want any,, they ask and i say
"it's all engine" they think i'm bs-ing them. like i've got
a secret weapon.. i don't !
