It's amazing what a lack of cupholders can do. Either my passenger holds my drink or I get something in a bottle. I just bought a Walmart cupholder thing that slides between the center console and passenger seat. It's a little haphazard and bulky, but better than trying to clutch and hold a coffee between my legs. No one likes getting the boys burned.

I have been using a powdercoated rotor for about 10 years now. It makes a damn sturdy cupholder and a nice prop for explaining the mysteries of the rotary.

I pop out the change holder in the center console (previous owner broke all of the tabs off). and my coffee mug slips right in.

I use those cup holders that hang off the door in the window track. But instead of hanging them on the door, I hang them on the top lip of the glove box. Easily removed, and work nicely, actually.

I tried the type that Ray shows up there, and it didn't work too well in my car. My seat was too wide and pushed it out of slot all the time. YMMV.

If you have an SA, just pull the ashtray and put in a miata cup holder like this:

^The Miata cup holder will work up through 83's. That's what I have in mine and I love it!

That's not a bad plan, actually.

I generally just put my drink in the triangle formed by the side of the psg seat, the rear of the shift surround, and the front of the console. Perfectly calibrated for 12oz cans. Doesn't work well with crushable cups, though.

I would love to have the Miata cup holders, but no such luck for my 5 letter. Oh well... I also think my seats have me at a disadvantage to holding a drink anywhere near them. They are very tight in the car.

The door hanging cup holders are getting harder to find these days. I looked several places before I finally found them.

i have a miata cup holder but because my shifter is about 8" back from stock I cant use it. So I am making a shifter surround with the shifter hole at the rear (like the FB has compared to ,y SA)then two cup holders in front of shifter.

I stick my coffee cup between the passenger seat and the door. Holds the 24 ounce cups just fine.

I do the same thing in my VW, which also has a notable lack of cupholdrage.

Solution For 84/85.

1) Seemingly innocent cup-holder.

2) Place to Install

3) Installed in 0.2 seconds.

4) Holding water bottle..

5) Driver's View, within easy reach.

6) Easily removed when not in use.

That has been the lesson for today,

^Genius, I may have to borrow that idea here real soon.

When I'm driving and I have a drink in the car I have my other girlfriend, not my 7, hold the drink between her legs. It's a technique we call "crotching it" here, works well.

Until it breaks and dumps your drink all over your lap.

They also aren't very stable - there is a lot of side to side flop action.

Installed momo seats leave just enough space to apply pressure for 32oz cups or greater between the seat and center console.

I do this ^ in my SE, the glove box trick works but the holders dont hold cups good enough for me to trust them anymore lol.

Does anyone remember the company that made the stainless and aluminum stereo install kit, that you could get guage holes or slide out cup holders in it?

I found nice color matched (maroon) cupholders like Directfreak although I had used them in my window sills, the glovebox is ingenious, easier on the window seals and more out of the way!

I used them like that for YEARS. Never had a problem.. They did NOT slop side to side either.

Although once I did wrap part of it with electrical tape to make it thicker, and be "pinned" in place easier.

It be interesting to make a new one out of Metal?
