Oh wow, this is spot on perfect! You're a legend, thanks very much. Already checked a few numbers and has come in very handy.

I've been searching for the manufacture date on my RHD SA, mostly out of curiousity. Is there any reference material that would help? There is a tag in the door jam saying it was imported in 1978 but the other info tags are all gone.
Vin number is SA22C129674.

Can't do any vin checks because of the short vin number.

Its definitely sometime in 78. See this post for some 78 VINs. Maybe this will help.

its probably covered, but the US vins are 500001, the Japanese start with 100001. yours would be pretty early, but we have no access to any documentation to go any further

the parts catalog has the monthly starting vins in it, but you would need a Japanese one

USD cars have the month and year of manufacture right on the drivers door jam tag. Don't JDM cars have the same tag?

Australian delivered RHD models do not have this. The door jamb only has a wheel and tyre placard sticker. The month and year of manufacture is stamped on the firewall build plate and that is it. Every JDM 1st gen I've seen is the same and so is the parts fiche. The tag you mentioned is shown in US parts fiche for 81-85 models (but not 78-80) and is listed as MVSS Caution Label, which I assume is an abbreviation for Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. On Australian cars, there is similar plate for compliance with Australian Design Rules (equivalent to FMVSS), but it is on the passenger (left) side of the firewall. It has the month and year of Australian compliance, but that date is generally a few months later than manufacture (which is when the car left Hiroshima).

Also, the SA22C number is not a VIN so you can't do VIN checks. It is a chassis number, which is why it looks short - there are no numbers missing. The last 6 digits is a serial/build number. Each car was numbered sequentially, with the 1 prefix being used for JDM series 1. From this, you will know this is the 29674th car to be manufactured for the JDM during the series 1 model years. It does appear to be 1978 based on the numbers listed in the VIN thread linked.

As pointed above, to be 100% sure, you need a Japanese parts fiche for 1978-1980 to see month and year listings for the chassis number. These come up from time to time on Yahoo JP
