PA RX-7s at Vintage Grand Prix

July 18-19 Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix. Bring your RX-7. West Penn Mazda Club will have a tent. Registration online available until 7-16-2009. You may also register at the gate. Fee is $20 and proceeds benefit Autisim Society of Pittsburgh and Allegheny Valley School. Here is a link to the event website:

I'll have my '84 GSL there. It would be great to have more 1st gens.

Hey Larry... I wonder if anyone posted about the PVGP in the regional forum?

For such a cool event, I've always thought the PVGP doesn't really get enough attention. For example, I've never seen any coverage of it in Hemmings Classic Car or Sports & Exotic, and they seem to love that kind of thing. If you like seeing old cars (many much older than RX-7s), the PVGP is a very good time.

I'll see you there!

I posted it in the regional forum too. I don't know why it just occured to me to post it on this site. I'm surprised that Dale or Mark didn't think of it either. See you Saturday.

Yes, its short notice, but I just looked on Mapquest, you could be here in under 3 hours, spend the day, take a scenic drive with the club to dinner and be home at a reasonable hour that night. So rinse one of your 5 off, gas it up and bring your car.

Can't be any worse than last year, where we had 1 SA, 1 FC, 1 FD and an MP3 Protege. I think we were outnumbered by the pre-War Rolls Royces.

Well, this was a very fun event as in past years. Over the two days, we saw two FBs, two FCs, three FDs, two FEs, a '77 Cosmo, and a bunch of Mazda 3s and Proteges. Here are a few photos:

Actually, the cars above were part of the International Car Show that is held in conjunction with the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix. The PVGP is one of a number of vintage races held each year in which cars from various classes compete. The PVGP is the only one held entirely on city streets rather than an actual race track. However, the newest cars competing are from 1969 and earlier. The only representation for the entire nation of Japan that I saw was a 1965 Datsun 1500 roadster. If you want more info on the race participants, I think they have that on the website (see link posted above by iowa_hawk1).

Anyway, to be in the car show you just have to make a donation to autism charities. They've been doing this for 27 years now.

Yeah, sorry. I'm not an RX-8 person. I thought that was the correct shorthand term.

I dropped by last year but without my car. Looks like a much better showing this year. Good work!

I've been going to the PVGP for almost 20 years now. Its always a blast. Its the only thing I really miss about leaving Pittsburgh. The best day is always Saturday which is normally British car day as well.

Depends on what you're there for I guess. Yes, the Saturday car shows have probably more than double the number of cars which I enjoy very much. However if you're a vintage race fan, Saturday is time trials, practice laps and exhibition runs only. The actual races are on Sunday. Both days are cool.

Sounds like a great event and a good cause! I Maybe someone should get an old car, slap a rotary in it, and show everyone what's up!

PA West Penn Mazda Club at Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix

Here is a photo of my car with the original window sticker next to the West Penn Mazda club tent and banner along with a race picture. The last pic is my new Cayman S complete with Cannondale bike on the roof.

Cool idea, but the Vintage Sports Car Club of America (VSCCA) would shoot that down. They're sticklers for originality, and they sanction all the races except for the exhibition "Marque of the Year" stuff (this year, BMW, and never in the 27 years of the Vintage Grand Prix anything Japanese):

http://www.vscca.org/

In fact, when I re-checked my program, the race that included the '65 Datsun wasn't even an "official" VSCCA race. Technically, all the "official" races require that the car be built on or before 12/31/59. Even the 110S Cosmo was still just a glimmer in Mazda's eye back then. Too bad.

For all I know, it might be... I'm not really -8 aware, either.

Well, there is an "FE" in the RX-8's VIN number much as there is an SA, FB, FC... in the VIN of an RX-7. However after your comment I googled "RX-8 FE" and didn't get that many hits, so it probably is not a term that is as commonly used as the RX-7 codes are around here.

Just stumbled across this thread. I'm always in the 3rd gen section. This was my first year going to the grand prix and enjoyed it very much. I went both saturday and sunday. It was a very good event. The international car show had a great turn out. I encourage everyone to check it out. I'll probably enter my car in the show next year.
