Rotary horror stories
Rotaries get a lot of razzing about a lack of reliability, but I found out how much of a punishment one can take...
When I took my 13B apart I noticed there were no triangular apex seals in either rotor. At first I just thought they fell out somewhere, but how could all 6 elude me? I've come to the conclusion that the PO never put them in.
It also had 0 compression on the front rotor. The PO blew the apex seals out, but I didn't know any better so I drove it anyway.
At any rate the engine did move under its own power, and it made it home. I guess thats the equivalent of a piston car having NO rings on 2 cylinders and one set of compression rings on the other 2 and still driving home!!!
So ya'll got stories to top that? I'm sure I just wanna read them.
ALSO... I likes this video. Talk about engines taking a beating!

the 12a my car originally had was run with no oil for at least 1000 miles by the po, scorching the housings and rendering them useless. drove well though :P and currently i have a hairline crack in the bottom oil cooler fitting, meaning my car dumps a quart every 150 miles.

OT, but do you need an oil cooler? I've got a spare colecting dust.

I've got chunks taken out of mine.... I drove around 60 miles with it blown out. In my defence I didn't know any better. I was under the assumption "WHAT IS THE HYPE ABOUT ROTARIES... THEY SUCK", but now I know that was less than half of what the machine is capable of. :P

I am absolutly livid.
If I ever catch the last guy that built the 13B in my car I'll wring his neck till it is truly red.
There is NO OIL PRESSURE REGULATOR CONTROL VALVE!!!! I didn't know about this part cause I've never taken apart one of these engines. I've been wondering why I have ZERO oil pressure... Well thats why!
Guess I'm gonna take ANOTHER part off of my 12A tomorrow.

oldie but a goodie. Mr Ko was driving at the 8250 rev limiter, and the engine said no. i'm not sure what failed first, but you can see the rotors stopped orbiting, and started spinning, which made them round, then it locked up and since the car was going 100mph, it sheared the stationary gear, and then the flywheel right off.
the symptom? the engine quit. no drama, no smoke, it just stopped.
the engine we put in after that we got rid of the rev limiter, and ran it to 9400, and it is tired, but intact.

Looking at the pics, I would hazard that the stat gear let go first; it's what's in charge of orbits vs rotations. Could have been flex in the e-shaft due to balance harmonics crashed the bearing.
