Registration DMV late 8 YEARS!!!
#26
California DMV records only go back 7 years...best thing to do is call the DMV, tell them you just bought it and that you have a bill of sale for last week ... you might also need a statement of facts. all you have to write on the statement of facts is that you just bought the car last week for 25 dollars
they might ask you to bring the car in so they can verify it is in your possession
it should only cost you 100 bucks or so there is tax on the purchase price, registration fee, lic plate fees, and a few other fees
you will need proof of insurance or they will send you a letter in the mail a few months later saying they are canceling the reg... and a smog
or
you can file for lien sale, which should only cost you about 50 bucks plus reg fees(maybe 150 total). The DMV will send out a notice to the last registered owner asking if they still claim ownership (since it is off the books it won't matter) the title will be your in 30-45 days

Gee....Georgia must be mighty lenient...My 83 sat for years. I parked her in 99 and put her back on the road this past year. I had to pay 20 for the tag, about 3-4 for the ad valorem taxes, past 2 years of ad valorem taxes at about the same per year, and 5-10 for registering her late. All together it cost me about 40 bucks to get her registered.
Had I signed a paper stating that she wasn't running when I let the registration lapse I still would have had to pay the past taxes, but I wouldn't have had to pay the late fee.
When you buy a car here you only have to pay the current ad valorem taxes and $20 tag fee. The title transfer is only $18. Still less than $45. If you go over your alotted time to get it registered...(7-10 days I think) it's only 5-10 bucks....unless it goes over a year and then it goes back to the past ad valorem taxes due, but only if you owned the car.

When you guys say you pay $100 for your plates and ticket.
In Australia in costs about $523 for 12 months in a 4cyl/2 rotor.
This includes 3rd party insurance if you maim someone but not their possessions you damage. This is about $470USD. What does it cost when the car is on road for just vehicle registration (and associated fees, like they bundle a road improvement fee etc etc here) including the injury insurance.
I remember paying 2.5% tax on buying a used vehicle, and $65 for a certificate from a service station to say the car is roadworthy. But actual rego comes to over $500!!!
Do you guys really get it that cheap?

For us in canada (for me anyways but im in the male, under 20, student category)
I pay $80 a year for registration which is strictly sticking a plate on my car.
The insurance for me for a year is $1100 (includes comprehensive which is animal colision, fire, hail, theft and vandalism. -100 to not have that)
So $1200 dollars for me for a car for a year to have it drivable with third party insurance and comprehensive. 1000-1100 for with just third party, covering if you hit others and kill/maim them.
For my parents, they insure a GMC yukon, 2 subarus and a chevy 2500 truck for 970 per year(all from the 2000's so newish). So it varies alot depending on vehicle and age of driver, and driving record.
Thats for a vehicle you can legally drive, lowest level of insurance plus registration.

When we say we pay $100 for plates that doesn't include the cost of insurance, which is manditory. So here's your breakdown:
1. Buy rx7 $$$$$
2. insure rx7, this varies a lot depending on age and how long you've had insurance but is generally anywhere from $500 to $2000 per year for basic liability
3. take your proof of insurance to a registry and pay another $100 or so for your plate.
4. have fun.
Edit: I personally pay about $950 a year for insurance and another $80 or so for my plate.

I just paid about $30 for my plates and around $450 a year for insurance. Plates are a little more the first time if I want custom tags, but otherwise pretty cheap here. When I first bought the car I only paid like $23 for the plates and $360 a year for insurance, and at that time I was 21 with two major accidents on my record. Of course when I moved to California for a couple years I was paying like $650 for the insurance and they nailed me for all kinds of weird fees like bringing in a vehicle from out of state, and it cost me $400 to put plates on the thing for a year. On top of that it cost me $250 to get it tuned to pass smog. In the end some federal judge said the state was breaking the law charging all those fees and a couple years ago I got a check in the mail for reimbursement plus interest to the tune of about $350.
