Likewise, you should've seen how quickly my cars would eat spark plugs. (I prefer the BR8ET's for fouling resistance, or modified Autolite 3923's for use with an MSD) After 3k the center electrodes on the leading plugs would be rotor-shaped. I used to replace all four plugs every 3k, but after a while I got sick of $16 a month just for spark plugs, so I'd rotate the leadings to the trailing side and put the fresh plugs in the leading holes.

The four electrode plugs seem insensitive to wear, mainly because they suck even when new.
Is the spark plug failure possibly a side effect of how lean and the timing advance you use on your cars? Just curious

Well.
* I read up on a future project, searching the forum.
* It takes me months to get in gear and get going.
* I rip it apart without noticing anything that might be important.
* I fix it.
* Reassembly.
* Reassembly in the correct order.
HEHE

Nah seriously, I usually just dives headfirst into projects, I never say No.
Build such things as.
Peripheral port housings.
Made 12A size housing from 13B housings.
Rebuilding engines.
Porting engines.
Currently building a beefier cage for the racecar.
And rebuilding a REW for a customer.

Somehow it allways turns out good :

Id give myself a 6/10 for my mechanical abilities but a 2/10 for time alotted to work on my car. Ive been doing brakes and oil changes since I was 16 but in the last few years Ive undertaken much larger jobs. Ive done alot with the suspension in my car, tracked down electrical gremlins, ignition mods, etc. Since my car always runs better than when I started I guess I have some skills. I havent done big jobs like clutches or engine rebuilds but plan on doing those myself in the future when the time comes.

hell yeah, it's better than reading half of the threads where people just bash on eachother rather than talking about anything meaningful. If you'd rather bash then thats your problem.

deffenetly no mechanic here lol, 85 gsl is my first car, so i'm learning as i go, i can proudly and gladly say that i know more about rotaries than pistons =D but nothing to brag about i can turn a wrench and know where it goes and i'm beginning to learn how to diagnose...honestly if it wasn't for the forum and asking questions i wouldn't know what to do, sometimes i sorta know what to do but it's great having someone to assure you of it. over the last couple of weeks when i've really digged into the forum i've got almost all my problems fixed, so i thank you guys that have asked previous questions and stuff like that lol. and thanks to those who've answered mine ...... if anyone needs my help let me know, in either case i'm always willing to learn some more.

I would rate my self at about an 8.

About 13 years ago I would have given myself a 1 or 2 but I have learned a lot since than doing all my own work. The only thing I have done at a shop is alignment and tires.

Well, I'd rate my 1st gen knowledge at about 8/10. When I joined the club way back, my overall car experience was mabey 2/10 and my 1st gen knowledge about 0. Since joining, I've brought back my 82 from major rusting, 2nd gen engine swap, tuned an Edelbrock 600 for the 13B, race front coil overs and big brakes, custom fuel cell installed, all custom exhaust, custom rad mount, made a TT box myself, removed stock gauge cluster and installed all aftermarket gauges and wired up myself, and now working on tuning a Mikuni 50phh2. On top of that, none of the 6 cars I've owned have gone to a mechanic besides to have safety checks done for registration or emissions tests. To top it off, I work everyday with hydraulics, electrical systems, and general assembly and testing of mining equipment.

I can change the gas on any vehicle.

Even if I have to design and build it first...

I had to wait 15 years before i could own my first Rotary powered car. So what else could i do but, read, read, read, read and well read! about them.

When the day came that i bought it,not allot of things scared me on it.(Yet still i had some bottles of ATF for the odd time that the darn 12A didnt want to start up)

I think my general Rotary knowledge is on a 8 by now.General knowledge about them, and wrenching is on par luckilly!

I`am new to the whole "cams, pistons, and other crap" engines.I have changed 3 cambelts on different engines.... Damb pistons, they scare me!!

Karis

Ps: I havent owned a Rx7 anymore since 2005...

I bought my SA in 1989. Since that day, no one's turned a screw on it except me. I've never rebuilt the trans or the diff (have replaced both once) but there's little else on the car that I haven't had apart and together. Reupholstered it twice; once with the original seats, once with seats from an 85, from patterns made myself. Three engine rebuilds, two carb rebuilds, stripped and refurbished the engine compartment, replaced the dash, replaced the cluster, retrofitted electric windows, installed a custom guage set in the console, rebuilt brake cylinders, endless more.

I'd say I'm around an 8, 8.5. I've maintained every car my wife or I have ever owned.

Wish I'd discovered this place a bit earlier. My education would have been a bit less expensive.

I would LOVE to learn upholstery.

I'd say my mechanical ability is average- I can turn a wrench, I have a pretty thorogh understanding of how an engine and car works... I just lack experience. My '7 was the first engine pull / swap I've ever done. I'm just glad I have friends who know what they're doing to teach me.

Sewing machine's just another kind of power tool.

Taught myself sewing from a book, doing costumes for sci-fi conventions back in my high-school days; taught myself upholstery by disassembling the ratted out seats in my '80, looking at how they were put together.

Takes a pretty healthy sewing machine to do upholstery, though. One with a hand-assist wheel for those "gotta sew thru 6 layers plus foam" moments

I'm a 3 maybe a 4. I used to do a lot with American cars, some with British cars, and understand much more about cars in general than I can do. So I'll tell you what to do, and not help you do it. That makes me foreman, right?

I got my first rx7 at 18. I can do all the basic **** but I dunno I'm not a good welder and I doubt I could port housings etc. I can take a sev to pieces though prob not put it back together haha!

My mates a diesel mechanic who loves to work for beer and go for a skid after! Sorted.

Wink I'm good, but someone's always better

With an engine lathe and a welder I can make pretty much anything fit any shape hole.
