My first auto-X in the 83 RX-7

My first auto-X in the 83 RX-7
Well I had a blast, everyone out there was totaly awsome and the nicest people and talked me through evrything and just made me feel totaly welcome out there. I cant wait to get out there again on July 31 and already have ideas on where to improve myself and car. With that being said lol I didnt do all that great but couldve done ALOT worse lol.
Even with my poor times I was happy with all my runs because the car did what I told it to. I didnt have any spinouts but on my 4th and last run I had a DNF with a time of 64.456, all I can say is I had a brain fart lol, passed a slolom cone on wrong side sigh lol. My 4 times were...
1st run---68.405
2nd run---65.850 +1 cone
3rd run---63.999
4th run---64.456 +DNF
I placed 86 out of 88 with a 03 Z06 and a junior kart behind me with a PAX time of 54.911 witch was 14.185 seconds behind the 1st place Evo. No excuses but out of all the CARS I had the skinniest and highest profile tires, Im still going to run these for a few more outtings tho before I throw on my 14x7 enkei 92's but I am going to try taking off the rear swaybar for the July 31 event at Lone Star Park. Im also going to try and tune my carb a little bit better, I think im still running a bit rich.
All in all I would call today a success, I learned alot about my car and my own skills and where I need to improve mainly myself for my next outting. Heres a list of the PAX time results ^^ Im comp stupid so dont know a better way to show lol

I was told today I did rather well for the setup I had with the OE tire size, this course is the slickest out of the places they run and my heat was the last. It was a sealed asphalt lot and the temps when I ran were about 120's ( temp gun aimed at ground).
Ill see if I can find the layout, I printed it out, it had alot of fast sweepers and 3 slolom sections and some real tight corners right after the sloloms lol.
oh yeah 185/70/13's negotiator hp's were the tires I was running lol

Glad you had fun, that's what it's all about. You do have some stiff competition in CSP with Jason McCall and Chris Robbins. Chris was .5 seconds out of trophies at the Lincoln National Tour. I was 22 seconds back from him in last place. That's the best times from 2 courses added together. It sounds like you have some ideas to improve yourself and the car. Good luck and don't worry about how you compare to the better national drivers. They spend a lot more money than we do.

Congrats on your first race! You passed what I call "the first test." Usually, people will have one of two experiences at their first autocross. Most will come out, nail a few cones, get a few DNF's, meet a lot of cool car nuts, and have a blast. Those are the ones that come back again and again. Then there's the minority that come out, DNF or mow down some cones, get really frustrated and/or embarrassed, and never show their face again. Sadly a couple of the people I've invited have been in that category! Glad to see you were in the majority.
CSP is a really tough class to excel at in our cars thanks to the first gen Miata. It's lighter, more powerful, and just an all-around good platform for dodging cones. And there's usually a large wolf pack of them with a lot of mods and some pretty talented drivers (see: old farts)
My advice is to change as little as possible about your car for at least the first season. It's much easier to improve as a driver that way. You'll become better faster, rather than just faster. When you finally hit the point where your times aren't significantly improving, then you can start working on the car. For now, just keep it running as well as you can and make sure the tires and suspension stay in good working condition. My two cents.

Yeah thats exactly what im going to do, leave the car as is with the exception of the rear swaybar for my next outting, its gonna come off. I had alot of the older guys running out there come over to check out my car and tell my there stories of when they were running there 1st gens out there back in the day lol. Gave me alot of good advice and removing that seemed to come out of everyone of there mouths.
Im gonna do my best to get outside video of the car next time, its hard cause none of my freinds are up early enough to come out. But im deffinately gonna find a better in car mount and ill at least have that for next time. Thanks for all the encouragement you guys

Randy, there's really only two reasons to consider removing the rear swaybar:
1. If the car has a tendency for the back end to try to pass the front end (oversteer)
2. If the inside rear wheel spins excessively when applying power at the exit of a turn.
If you aren't having either of those issues, then leave it on for the added stability. And if you decide you do want to try running without it, then simply disconnect one of the end links, rather than the entire bar, so it can easily be hooked up again if you don't like it.

It Actually felt pretty good the way it was at the speed I was going, on my 3 run I was taping the brake less and ust lifting off in 2nd and the nose was turning in just right.

I might try running without my rear sway bar for the next race. I do have a problem with the inside tire spinning as I throttle out of a turn. Even on slicks with a LSD I still saw some smoke from one wheel in the pics from the last race.
If you want a good and somewhat inexpensive external camera for autocross, I suggest a GoPro Hero. I've used it for a number of races and I see them on a lot of the other cars too. As long as your paint or glass is clean, the suction mount will not come loose no matter how many G's you pull. Mine even stayed on my bike when I crashed it up at the Dragon. They're awesome little cameras and the newer ones shoot in HD.

Heres a pic I took of Belle out at TMS, looks like I caught Chris Robbins MX-5 in the back ground lol.

I think my ignition, suspension mods put me in CSP. I have an MSD waste spark setup, re-speed camber plates, tokiko blue hp shocks/struts(re-speed), racing beat springs, striped emissions, no cat, racing beat pre silencer, no name freebie muffler, poly bushings/links all around. But I could be wrong, ill have to look and check on STS, thanks^^

Hey Hey duffman692002, you should deffinately come out, it would totaly kick *** to have a little RX7Club.com support out there im sure that alone would add like 10 hp

They have alot of loaner helmets, and there where some pretty loud cars out there, what do you have on it exhaust wise?
#21
I think all of those mods are STS-legal but you'd have to check the rulebook to be sure.
As far as noise goes, I don't know what the limit is at your sites but I run a header>magnaflow>2.5" pipe to side exit and I haven't been DNF'd over it yet. Unless you're running open header, I wouldn't worry too much.

The emissions and lack of cat bump it to CSP. I have the same problem plus dual weber dcd carbs. If you want to plan a trip around an autocross check out nrscca.org for our calander. The only problem is almost all of our events are in Lincoln about 50 miles from Omaha. It would be great to race with you though.

Was a slow day at work so brought my car in the shop to look over cause its leaning more to the driver side. Got run off the road before the auto-x event and pushed my wheel back to almost touching the fender.
Heres a pic of the control arm lol
Well got new one on b4 event and aligned it numbers were good with no major adjustments. Drove straight with no pulls but height tweaked a bit lower on driver side. Found out why today, right behind the crossmember the driver sub frame is tweaked. Sooooo im gonna take it to a frame an alighnment shop to get her all squared up next Teusday, hopefully it wont hurt my pocket book to much .
