yep this one was a fine example. Owned by Sterling McCall of the Sterling McCall Lexus/Toyota dealership fame.
I took this picture back in 2002 in Clear Lake Texas at an antique car and boat show.

I completely disagree. I think you should install your header and THEN put the completely useless fender mirrors on and keep them on for about 12 hours until you get into an accident and then your whole month will be shot. You know this would happen because you KNOW that SanAn drivers are complete douchebags (no offense lol).

Will the right set of fender mirrors work?
Does anyone actually have any of these on their car and uses them? On the ones in the picture of the Datsun Z, do you think they have a different convex shape?

"where can i get one of these"
I got the silver SA model on ebay a couple years back, it's says "T.T.C. 2003, Made in China" on the bottom. It's motorized and really fast, you roll it backwards about a foot and it takes off across the room popping wheelies. But I haven't seen any since.
Here's another model with the fender mirrors, a '79 Savannah RX-7 available on ebay:
And yeah, those fender mirrors look cool but can you actually see anything with them? I saw the brown Z car at an Old School Japanese Car meeting in the Atlanta area this summer, I should have asked the owner (the guy with the cell phone) if they were functional or just for looks.
But whatever, people use them. Here's another one that showed up at the OSJC meet with fender mirrors, a '74 Honda Civic:

That '74 Civic was a fantastic model, I drove one to death back in the early '80s (was actually still running fine, but the blue had turned to white and the too-expensive-to-replace rear struts were gone, kind of hard on the head).
Fifty miles per gallon, no cat and lower emissions than cars with cats. Plus it's a blast to drive. You are real close to the front bumper, making those fender mounted mirrors easier to use.
Just don't get in an accident.
Mickster, you are right, that's the look:

Not absolutely sure, but I think one of the reasons the fender mirrors never made it to the US market was their nasty habit of eviscerating any hapless pedestrian you might happen to clip.
That, and it takes two people to adjust them, unless they're electrified.

does anyone ever really use the side mirrors anyways :P...i know i don't use mine unless i'm changing lanes, if i'm backing up i just throw my arm over and turn around lol, and to change lanes i just do a quick glance to see how much room i have then turn my head and make sure there's no one right beside me and most of the time i can do this with the overhead mirror so i wouldn't mind having some fender mirrors since they look cooler
