I Finally Decided on a Color
My car has been gutted for a couple of months and is ready to be painted. But with the crappy weather we've had this winter the body shop has been too busy with collision work and hasn't been able to take mine. But that's given me plenty of time to look at colors and decide which one to use. I knew all along that I wanted a dark blue of some sort but hadn't seen that exact right color yet...until yesterday. I cruised a few car lots and took some pictures of various shades of blue. When I got to the Mazda delaer I saw the right one...it was a CX-9 with Stormy Blue Mica. I came home and did some research and found a great thread on the RX-8 Club forum with some really good pictures of RX-8s painted Stormy Blue Mica. Here are a couple of samples...there are more here:

Very nice!!! I recently painted one of my fb's a very similar color; however, my paint job didn't turn out so shinny. Yours should look great. :icon_tup:
|
my GF is obsessed with that color!!
|
MMM!(drool), I REALLY like that color, very very classy color for an FB.
|
you're going to paint you L6 car this blue?
|
Toss a little bit of some House of Kolor kameleon color changing flakes into the mix. :)
|
Why couldn't I have come across a deal on an rx8 that color?
I can't wait to see what it looks like after it is painted. It should be a gorgeous color for an FB. |

yeah, its pouring down snow here too. i'm confident that the car will look amazing when its done

Gasp....that's not a stock FB color! What ever happened to tradition!! Do your really think it is a good idea to dress up a 1985 classic in 2008 clothing?
Your 85 GS is not going to look like that pretty blue RX-8 in your photos. (Although I must admit, that blue does salvage some of the failure of the horrendous 4 door, back seated RX-8 design flaws). In fact, that stormy metallic blue might look kind of funny on the GS. Maybe you should photoshop it first? Just some thoughts from the Old School. Ray |

But that's what my '79 RX-7 and '64 MGB are for...they are both almost completely original, just the way they left the factory. This one, the '85 GS, is for me to do whatever I want to make it the car I want. After all, it has a blower on it! I have a hard time imagining what things will look like, but I've been trying to picture this color on my car, and I think it'll look hot! I'm thinking about having the mirrors and the door handles painted this color as well (but probably not the windshield trim). I'll also have them shave the badge holes, side markers and antenna hole. I can't wait to see what it looks like! Rich |
i personally would keep the badge holes and antenna hole. they would give the car a nice contrast, as would the black moulding on the body and around the windshield. i think i would even leave the door handles black. just my opinion though.
|
Just poking you in the ribs a bit Rich, I know what you are up to and it just might work. But if you don't like it when you are done, you can always say I told you so.
Ray |
that is a great Blue colour , just as nice as innocent blue mica on the FD's , maybe even better.
get some good pics in sun, cloud, dusk and dawn when you are done |
I always liked that shade of blue, was actually going to do my T2 FB that color originally, but decided to go with black instead, can't wait to see some pics!

Ray Ive seen an FB (on this forum) with that same color tone and it looked BEAUTIFUL!!! KEEP THIS BLUE MICA COLOR!!! |
I think it'll turn out really good. Might even influence my wanting to repaint my FB to a shade of blue. Just keep us updated. :)
|
did you look into the Dodge Viper blue? i had it on an old car of mine and it looked sweet. I've always wanted to try it on a FB. just to see what it would look like. i would paint mine that color but the color i have is one that is kind of sought after. L6 color code.

Then it's definitely worth it, as long as your happy.
|
shave it all, but keep the mirrors and trim black. The contrast is good. I totally agree with the color though. Blue mica would look real svelt.
|
Finally! She got painted last Friday...here are the first pictures....they really don't do her justice...she's beautiful! By the way, I finally figured out a good name for this car...Stormy!

Ooh... shiny...
|
very nice!
|
Brilliant!!! Thanks for the post-pics.
|
I really like that color. Can you get some whole car shots out in the un so we can see what it really looks like? I need to paint my car soon and normally its not even a question, they are all black but Im thinking blue on the RX7 for some reason.

A few more pictures. It was quite dusty, and they didn't have a spot right outside the door with good sunshine so I just took a few shots of the rear of the car which was in the sun.
Rich |
That is a sweet color. I wish i could paint my 84 something close to that, but it has the burgundy interior. That would just look awful with the blue, so ill probably do a silver repaint or a gray maybe. Hope to see some pics of it when its all assembled.
|
WOW rich! that looks amazing! for a second i though this was your SA...i was gonna slap you for getting rid of the orange LOL. Man that looks good. How much did the actual paint cost you?

http://picasaweb.google.com/rdfrahm/79RX720080926# And it's Sonic Bronze Metallic, not orange :) I don't have any idea yet about cost...he hasn't figured it up. I'm expecting the total to be around $7k - $8k, but don't know if he'll itemize it out so I can see how much the paint was. Rich |
that blue looks great!
|
Can't wait to see it all together. I'm still torn between my original Sonic Bronze, and switching to a blue, likely the SA Daytona Blue, so it's at least an original color.
|
good choice
I think you chose the perfect color. I have always been a fan of that color Rx-8 and it looks great on an FB. Congrates on the new paint. Now hurry and and get her put back together so we can see the finished product.
|
Rich, it simply looks fantastic so far. I can't wait to see it all put back together and the final product.

Here are the latest pictures from the body shop. Not very good, because it's indoors and dusty, but you can see that the hood is done and the fenders and doors are on it. In fact everything is painted except the bumper covers. The chemical stripper they used on them ruined them, so I took them off my parts car and ran them up there yesterday. I've also attached a couple of pictures of the gauge/stereo panel I made, with the Cyberdyne Blue Ice digital gauges in it. I had them paint the panel the same color as the body...I think it's going to look hot. I'll try to get a decent shot of it installed in the dash with the stereo in place as well.
Rich |
iam so close to painting my FB a shade of blue. i might keep it stock brownish dunno.. this thread makes me wanna change it up! looks good
|
I love it!! Every Time I see a Nice Blue FB, I keep thinking that's the direction I want to go. Especially Widebody..
I have Blue gauges in as well, and it would look Sa-Weet!! Mmm... Widebody.... Blue... |

|

Thanks guys...I can't wait to get her back and start putting her back together. The first task will be installing the rack & pinion conversion, then I'll wire the stereo and alarm system, then will probably drop the engine and transmission in, and finally work on the interior. I've attached a couple of pictures of the wheels she'll be wearing. They're Konig Troubles.
Rich |
Konig Trouble wheels = HOT! especially in person.
|
not a big fan of the Troubles but it may look good when the whole car is fully complete ........I need to see the whole picture......(grabs popcorn, sits an waits for Rich to finish FB)
