How many 1980 10AE owners here(not 1988 10AE)
Now that Madza is celebrating the 40th anniversary of the rotary with a special edition RX-8 and limiting that production, I think it would be appropriate to raise the awareness of the 1980 10th Anniversay Edition.
I am restoring my 1980 10AE and would like to see if there's others that share in my mission to preserve this rare and important edition.
Lets post photos regardless of the condition (especially of the "X" medallian). I'll start with mine. I'd like to restore the medallion but I need to see the original colors.
I'm currently waiting for a response from Mazda USA to see if they can provide more facts, especially the production count, and I'll post it here. But this is all I have so as far as published information.
Mazda celebrated its 10 years on the US market with special anniversary editions of the RX-7, as well as the 626 and GLC. Availability was to be limited to 8,000 cars nationwide (though exact mix among models was not specified), and all three models were outfitted in the same livery: a new color, Mazda Renaissance Red (for Mazda's "rebirth" in the US, thanks to the GLC, 626, and RX-7), pinstriping, and a medallion with the Roman numeral "X". The Anniversary RX-7 was based on the "GS sunroof" model and included specific upholstery on new "competition style" seats, a 4-speaker AM/EM sound system, inside remote controls for the dual outside rearview mirrors, and the otherwise optional aluminum alloy wheels.

Mmm....purrrty. Looks better in blue than **** yellow. But, then again, it's all because Wacky is running from the law. And, drinking himself into a stupor over a small ordeal of figuring out transmissions.
Y'know, wacky, if you quit drinkin' the heine's, you probably wouldn't have a memory problem. Well, you're old, so it'll happen but then at least NO ONE can blame the beer!

I work for a whole auto auction and was there when our buyer brought this 70 year man in with this SA. He could not sell it in the state of CA because it would not pass smog, but you can sell to a dealership or wholesaler without smoging it. Any way, I bought it from my work. This SA carries his spirit feels like, the whole time his wife was inside doing the paper work to sell it, he stood beside the SA starring at it. I could imagine the memories going through his mind: buying the car new when he was 40 years old. He asked if he could keep the license plates, I gave it to him with no problem. He included the glass and metal top. The booklet that the dealer gave him to record the maintenence. Which his records are all in there. But just like him, I bought the car mid-life, 40 as well. Any way, gonna get a hold of him and see if I can get some pictures of it when it was new(er). Plus get other info on it. The interior is like it was put in bubble for all these years, no scratches, fading or anything. The bucket seats have no wear and tear on them. the carpet in back, nothing, just like brand new. However, the suspension, radiator, clutch, transmission, exhaust needs work. Once those are done, just need to do lens gaskets, emblems, weather strips, window regulator, some touch up paint and she's ready to be put back into a bubble except for Seven stock and a few other meets and shows. There 160k on the chassis, and rotor-rebuild at 100k but since the rebuild, it spent most of the time in storage.

beautiful car. i'm sure it was hard for the man to get rid of it. i'd love to see some pics of it when it were new if you were able to get ahold of it. i have the counterpart to your car. an 80 Leather Sport(which was one of two special models offered in 1980) it has just a shade over 60K. it could use a new exhaust, could use new wheel bearings, it has a new clutch, and just needs a touch up on the exterior. ok, it could use a new paint job. but the interior is near perfect and the engine and trans are perfect! i bought my car off of the original owner. i had to go to new york to get the car.

Any 1980 RX7 AE for sale?
I am looking for an AE rx7 1980. I had one in highschool and am desperately looking for another. Anyone looking to sell or can point me to one?
Thanks

The 10th A/E cars are pretty rare. Nice ones even more so. Not many 1st gens come up for sale that I'm not aware of. I remember seeing maybe 3-5 of these in the last 5-10 years. With that said, lightening does still strike. You just need to be vigilant and ready when it does. Good luck with your search.

If your low coolant sensor's acting up, it might just need a clean or swap. Check the wiring and coolant level first. If it's busted, you can grab a new one online or at a car parts store easy.

I don't own a 1980 10AE, but I’ve come across a couple over the years, and they’re definitely something special. I helped a friend restore his a while back, and I remember how challenging it was to find original parts, especially for the medallion. We ended up getting some aftermarket options, but it didn’t feel the same. If you’re restoring yours, I’d say keep an eye on the condition of the interior, especially the seats—they can be a pain to repair if they’re worn out. Good luck with your restoration! Would love to see pics.
