Finally got my L6 project!!!

a couple of hours ago i made it home and safely tucked the newest addition to my rotary family safely in the garage. i had wanted an ocean blue metallic (L6) RX-7 for over a year and had been looking to replace the wrecked one that i have. i bought this one from michigan from another forum member and i'm pretty pleased with it. the engine appeares to be seized. i filled it with atf and i'll try tomorrow to get it rotating. i tried once and the 19mm bolt in the eccentric shaft came right loose. i tried tightening it but no go on the engine spinning. i'll let the atf work its magic and we'll see if its carbon lock or oil starvation. currently the clutch is out of the car but the trans has been bolted back in. i'll post pics of that beast tomorrow. rivets let loose on the riction surface... the car is a mess, even busting a brake line coming off of the trailor. i will keep updating this thread with its progress. i'm currently thinking that i will replace the engine with an SE engine..so if anyone has one laying around...i might even have a 13B from an 88 SE with 66K original miles to trade...that or i might just find a 12A in nice shape and drop that in there. only time will tell. for nw, here are the pictures i snapped tonight:

Looks pretty good on the outside. How about the interior? I like the color too.

interior is actually better than it looks. with a good cleaning and replacement of some minor plastics, it will be really nice! someone already re-did the vinyl on the door panels. it actually looks really nice!

i'm going to try and get the engine freed up today as well as finish installing all new rear brake lines. i'll post pics of the underbody and rear end later today.

Looking good Dave, I remember seeing you post a long time ago about wanting one in this color, cool that you found one. How is the underside? I assume there will be rust given where it came from...
Good luck!

That is a nice color. Don't see many like that. Looks pretty straight, too.

Did someone spraybomb the engine compartment flat black... or is that all dirt? I can see where someone had to scrub the VIN clear.

Grats and good luck. I wish I could build a "fleet." No space, though.

the underbody is in GREAT shape considering the age. i'l lsnap some pics while i'm installing the brake lines and wheel cylinders here in about an hour. i found tons of sand in the carpet as i was scrubbing it. makes me think it was originall y a florida or southern car... i cant verify that though.

i have been waiting some time to find an ocean blue car that wasn't a rag. i plan on installing another 12A and adding som LE wheels (if i can ever find them) and adding the factory IMSA spoiler i have laying aroung and repainting the car the original color (with spoiler).

i really do like the color as well. the engine compartment and underbody were undercoated some time when the car was new. i did clean the vin plate a tad. i've been cleaning up the engine bay as i prepare to pull the engine.

No idea where that is. Don't you love finding a basically rust free car to work with? How many miles are on it?

Thats awesome, a rare find in the salt belt for sure. I still can't beleive you don't have those LE wheels, they pop up on ebay every so often, you should be able to get a set... Would look really cool with the LE wheels and IMSA spoiler, so you've decided on a 12a then?

yeah, i'm going to go with the 12A. i'm going to use the 12A out of my 85 GSL. its a really great running engine. it woul dbe a nce engine for that L6 car. once the FC 13B i have with 66K miles sells on ebay, i'm going to shoot down to southern ohio and pick up a 13B from an SE with 75K miles from another forum member and put it in the GSL. the reason i'm not putting the 13B in the GS is because i dont want to spend all winter waiting and collecting parts (SE gas tank, exhaust, wiring harness, ecu) and spending money that i dont have to get the car up and running. with the 13B in the GSL, i can have that sit in the garage all winter and peck away at that while i have the L6 car that i've always wanted . i can at least drive it for another month before i have to put it away for the winter. it does force me to sell my tender blue 85 S that i restored 80% of the way last winter...

Jon is up north, where they measure gas by the liter. So your $2.25/gallon is a bargain compared to his $1/liter.......

Down here in the not-so-deep south, it's around $2/gallon. In the last week, I have bought it for $2.34, $2.17, and just yesterday $2.06. The price has dropped even more since I last bought any........

Sounds like a plan there Dave, is the GSL you're talking about the one you just did the auto to manual swap on? Also if you have a good running FC engine (you said S4 right?) why not swap that in instead of a SE engine?

the GSL that i'm borrowing the engine from is the one that i just put the manual trans in, yes. the engine runs really well and i would like to see it in the L6 car. the reason that i dont swap the FC engine in is because i dont want to mess around with taking the front cover off and buggering something up and smashing the thrust bearings and ruining the engine. too paranoid i guess...that and lack of front cover swapping experience. plus i guess i like to keep my FB's plug and play..

yea , a month ago we were paying $1.40 / liter . So at 3.8 liters / US gallon thats $5.32 a US gallon .

and to think we have a lot of oil resources here too . The problem is most of the gas price here in Canada is TAX. One of the drawbacks of only having only 30 million people paying income tax to the government to run the country , as opposed to 300 million people to fund goverments in the US.

so , mazdaverx , when does a collection of 7's require a visit to the shrink ?
