engine swap question

Hi guys, i just bought an 84 gs with a fried motor and due to a misscalculation my transpotation method failed. :P long story. Anywyas i am now thinking of going to the car with my working engine from 83 gsl, doing the swap on the spot, and then driving the car 2hours home.

I will be going with my dad who is an ex-mechanic who thinks this procedure of taking an engine out, putting a new one in will take prox 2-3hours.

Both cars are manual transmision, same 12a engine. So i would like just to confirm that 3h should be enouph to do this swap.

Thanks.

well the put it back together part is what i'm most worried about.

Since the car would need to drive itself(with me behind the wheel) 170km to my home after being put together

taking the engine out of the car is the easiest part of the process, and with the 12a engine, it's much easier since there are not that many components.

Yeah, if you work quickly 3 hours is a reasonable estimate, depending on the options the car has (power steering, AC, etc.).

Wow thats gonna suck. On second thought, bring plenty of beer, and give the prev-owner some as well!

LOL, i thought beer was best in a warmer conditions, isn't vodka better for when it's cold?
Btw anyone know what the standard equipment was on a 84 gs? did it have power stearing or anything like that? can't find that information anywhere.

i would allocate time to freshen up the engine with new vacuum lines and hoses..maybe even a new exh manifold gasket and oil pan gasket. take the time to clean the engine you're putting in. inspect the clutch while its out and replace if need be. replace the pilot bearing and seal while you're at it. toss on new belts. replace all of the oil filter pedestal o-rings. take this opportunity to save yourself a lot of time in future repairs.

thanks guys,

mazdaverx713b, most of the work will be done outside in -10c or so weather, the plan is to just get the engine in, and drive the car to a garage i rented where the car is gona go though the wroks. The clutch and clutch cylender on the car are new, so i'm not worried about them.
the engine will be out of the car soon after anyways for a repaint of the engine bay, and general clean up. This is mostly a quick fix to get the car home. Don't have the extra 300$ to get it towed home.

Thanks for the information.

Ok, so the plan has failed, the ex-owner didn't give promission to do the swap on his property, so will need to get the car towed to my garage first.

However i got offered another fb for $350 with a working engine, but fried clutch and rusted body.

This summer when i was looking for parts car for under $500 i couldn't find anything, now just in the past i come across 3, already bought 2, the 84 with fried engine and an 90 fc fully working.

so will propably be parting out 2 of the fbs, will keep you updated.

If by "putting it together" you mean putting the engine back together, then I agree entirely with this statement. Pulling an engine and replacing it with another, hooking everything up, I'd say 3 hours is fair.
