Craziest thing happened yesterday...
So a buddy of mine just bought a new Civic Si, got all the cute little Honda goodies on it: CAI, engine torque dampener, header, exhaust, etc.
He's always been talking about my FB, and wanted to go for a little drive to see how mine compares against his in terms of driveability, speed, handling, etc.
So I offer to take him out on a drive, we're cruising along, windows down, sunroof open, and I say to myself, "Self, it would be really sweet to just downshift and stomp on it, let him feel the boost."
So I did.
We go from 75mph to 130mph with the quickness, car's ticking along great, everything running smoothly and I hear this flapping noise, like cloth.
Now mind you, the wind's roaring around the cabin, engine's screaming beautifully with the acceleration and I'm keeping my eyes on the road ahead for the 5-0.
He says, "hey what's that flapping noise?" and POOF. That's literally what it sounded like.
I can't see anything from all the greyish-blue fuzz and crap that's suddenly everywhere in the cabin, dusty fibers making both of us choke and cough.
I hit the brakes pull over to the shoulder and stop. "WTF just F-ing happened?!"
A minute to calm down and I get out of the car to look around, and the problem becomes immediately visible...
My rear deck carpet is missing.
Apparently what happened is that the deck carpet was dry-rotted or something, and since I normally drive fast with all the windows up, the wind never really affected the stuff, so it just layed in the back.
Once I rolled the windows down though, the 130mph torrent just ripped the carpet to shreds...

Now the decision of whether to try and find a good condition black rear deck carpet from someone here or just fork over the change to buy one from stockinteriors.com

And yeah, I tried to wipe everything down inside the car to get the crap out, but it wasn't having it. I'm going to need to do some serious vacuuming/blowing to get it all out.

That's a funny story. I have my Grandmother's 50 year old sewing machine, and yes, it is electric. I had no problem basting carpet edges when I redid the interior in the Z. Any decent non-portable sewing machine should be able to do that, it doesn't have to be a commercial grade machine.

I'd be afraid something like that would jolt me and make me wreck. Especially at 130 MPH. Just for future safety precautions I would rig up a tie down system. Snap buttons or screws of some sort would work great.

Wow, that's definitely one to remember.
I noticed the carpet fibers disintegrating on my first FB (the silver s2) when I was removing the carpet to take out the taillights to tint them. My SA carpet has been okay to me lately, but this summer I plan on putting serious miles on it and I'm probably going to take out the rear deck carpet just so I can preserve it.
Oh and pics of the aftermath, totally!

that's happened to me, except my carpet didn't get torn to shreds. Just the whole back flapped forward blowing dust all over. Since then I put in some cargo straps through the holes. They're useful, but it's mainly to prevent that from happening again.

If you buy "fused back" carpet, it won't fray. Most of the replacement carpet that auto-parts places sell in rolls are of the fused-back type. It's not quite as plush as the factory carpet, but it's a pretty good match to the factory look... and it's very affordable. So much so that if it gets too dirty, you can just chuck it and cut another piece.
