MA Cool bit of history I found on my RX-7

Well I bought my RX-7 from the original owner some 7 years ago, and just recently visited his place again with the car to show him that it is still in one piece. It was a total surprise to him, and he was quite delighted to see the car again after all these years. In our talking I mentioned that I have every issue of the old Rotary Rocket magazine from the RX-7 Club of America from another RX-7 owner that I purchased another car from a couple of years ago.

The original owner of my car mentioned that if I look through then I should find a pic or two of my car with the original vanity license plate he had on it that said ROTARY. He actually still had the plates when I bought the car from him, but they had expired, and since been taken by another person here in MA. He gave me one of the old plates(the rear), and I still have it hanging on my wall in the garage. So I was messing around today, and thought I would get out the old binders with the magazines in them. Sure enough there was a section of the magazine it seemed every few months that showed pics of two or so vanity plates, and the background was an array of others. Wouldn't you know my car is in every array with a shot of the back plate that I still have, and the plastic plate surround that is still on the car to this day! Also in text below is the original owners name, vanity plate text, and town. It was so cool to see a magazine from 79 that has pictures of my car in it!

I took a few pics of it,and loaded them to photobucket, but I am brand new to that site, so I am unsure how to link it with pics showing up here. I will just provide a link to my album, and maybe someone can show me how to do it some day.

That's just the tip of the iceberg as far as cool info on my car that I got from the original owner. He gave me the original pre-order paperwork, and even the business card of the salesman. Amazing stuff!

Very cool, an original spark yellow survivor with history.

Reminds me of the car that etched 1st gen RX-7's in my brain, the tornado silver 1981 FB my adviser bought new back then in western Massachusetts (Amherst).

No he didn't order it from the factory. He did however go to the dealer before the car was said to be coming out,and put down a deposit on the first GS with black interior they got. He was then called a few months later, and told the first delivery of cars showed up,and he had his choice of any car on the carrier. He chose this yellow one which is a GS, but lacks the normal AC,and sunroof so many of them came with.

It was very cool connecting with him again, and talking about the car. He really misses it. I told him about the number of people that argue with me that the car has been painted, and he said to give them his phone number, and he will set them straight. Funny guy!!!

Unlike doemstic cars at the time, I don't believe you could actually option out a new RX-7 from the factory. They built em in their own combination of numbers and models and were sent over to be sold to the public. (at least the export ones) About all you could do was tell a dealer what color or specific feature(s) you wanted and you'd go on their list for next available. The dealers may have been able to have a say in how many S's and GS's and trade amoung themselves.

Chris, anything stopping you from getting the plate registered back on the car again? Seems fitting and something to show the guy next time you see him.

Chris - great story of your car's history! Pretty cool to be able to talk to AND show the car to its original owner. When I bought my SA (ebay/San Diego) I found some old paper work in it that traced the owner back to a Lady in WA state who bought it new. I gave her a call, this after 26 yrs, and you can imagine her surprise! She was tickled to know "her" car still existed. Sadly no secret paper-work or other errata but was a nice connection...

Scanned the original pre-order paperwork, business card of the salesman, undercoating warrenty paperwork, stock number sticker that was on windshield, and some of the large beauty shots the original owner had. They can be seen here.

thank you for posting that! i would love to find the original owner of my 85 GS but i doubt that it will ever happen. those original papers are the gold mine IMO. i have some for my 94 Corvette and i intend to write the original owner a letter telling him how his 50th birthday gift is doing and see if i can get some original pictures or paperwork scanned and emailed to me.

The strange thing is there is still a Mazda dealer in that same place, but my guess it isn't the same ownership. It is a Mazda/Lincoln/Mercury dealer now. I bought my RX-8 from them many years ago. I wonder if I called them if they would even remember Main Line Chrysler-Plymouth-Mazda?
