PDI is the Pre-Delivery Inspection, the mechanical end of the new car prep process. This was performed by a technician in the dealership. I was a Mazda technician from 1972 -1982 then was a Mazda service manager for 17 years after that.

Cool, so you've been in a lot of brand new Rx-7's. Tell me, what's your knowledge on Air Conditioning in the early years. I's widely held that air was not installed untill the car reached the US or once at the dealers. I've often wondered what the story was from the inside. Did both S and GS cars get air? Were wheels an option for both trim levels. I've always held that steel wheels standard on the S and the wallfels standard on the GS models. Also that a sunroof was not available on an S?

the S had steel wheels as standard equipment. the GS also had steel wheels as standard. the aluminum wheels were optional on the S and the GS. a/c was optional on both the S and the GS. the sunroof was not an option on the S. the GS had the sunroof option until 85, when the sunroof could only be had on the GSL and the GSL-SE.

First,on the a/c issue,there is a difference between west coast and east coast cars. There was no facoty a/c in west coast cars. Cars like GSL's that had a/c standard equipment were "port" installed before delivery to the vehicle. The rest were dealer installed.

In S models and GS models, a/c was always an option and dealer installed. Some GS's were port installed but no S models were. No sunroof was available on S models. I don't remember seeing an S model after 84.

in northern CA we see the following;

ALL GSL-SE's had factory A/C. ALL of the GSL's with PS had factory a/c. there also seems to be a higher percentage of 83's with factory a/c.

BUT

90% of everything else has port installed a/c

So, basically, the "factory"difference between 79/80 S and GS models were that stepping up to the GS, got you a sunroof, body moldings, rear sway bar, 4 spoke steering wheel 5sp manual or 3 sp auto. That air or alloys were an option available on either model?
