(OTHER) pros/cons of removing the air pump
#27
Did you guys also remove and cap of the vaccum lines going from the base of the ACV to the two Valve solenoids?
With the ACV gone, then these things are absolutely useless. I think.
I looked in an '87 Shop Manual and found it. At least I think it's close enough to the -SE that they should be the same things. Blue and Grey solenoids, their vaccum lines lead to the ACV.
They operate two of the three valves within the ACV.
The blue one is the Relief Valve solenoid,
the grey one is the Switching Valve solenoid.
That hepled clean up the engine bay at little more. But I'm not going to get a chance to run the engine for a while longer to test it.

Guys,
the problem I have found with the dual belt set-up is that unless you can find matched belts, one belt will always have more tension than the other. And don't worry about more force on one side, etc. That's what a pulley bearing is for. The problem is v belts need a minimum contact arc to prevent slipping. The second belt has the same insufficient arc but I guess the 2 in conjunction work if you can get the belts to match. I like the idea of using a short belt between the wp and the main pulley better. The belt is 3L220, although that is a fractional horsepower belt so I can't say how long they will last but Rob Golden of pineapple racing swears by it.

Anyone claiming that they feel a substantial power increase from removing the air pump is either mistaken, or just plain fulla ****; And here's why-
The air pump is never working very hard, folks. It's just blowing air into a pipe that already has a flow going thru it. And even if the arguement can be made that there is significant resistance being met by the outgoing air from the pump into the exhaust system, that is really only happening at idle.
When yer on the go, the ACV is directing the flow of air to the shroud around the exhaust manifold, where there's vitually zero resistance.
The air pump is a positive displacement blower; a vane type. So it's going, "FFUP-FFUP-FFUP-FFUP-FFUP..." all the time, and doing work. However, it is NOT trying to compress air.

heh, so I noticed my temp gauge start to go a little higher than normal today. Went and bought a new alternator belt and airpump belt and hooked them up, still a little high.. bought a new rad cap, that fixed it
*doh* just needed a radcap.
O'well, I did notice tho, altho this makes no sense, the car seems faster, to tell you the truth, now that I have the airpump hooked up again

that's the achelis heal of the butt dyno. anything you change that think will do you good, has the placebo effect and you'd swear if worked until someone proves you wrong. at least I think that's how it would work...

This weekend I'm putting the Bonez high flow exhaust system on my car and replacing the smog junk. It's getting close to inspection time. I'm not going to remove it again because I'm sick of the stench at stop lights. It doesn't get you high as an earlier post stated, nauseated is a better word.

Yeah, my *******. I don't ever hear of anyone saying what a difference in power their car seems to have when the fuel tank is almost empty.
Think about it. 16+ gallons @ how many pounds each?
That's alot of friggin wieght difference, yet I never read about anyone taking how much fuel was in their tank into concideration when they're spewin' 'bout their butt dyno!

Them be fighten' words!
haha
well, FYI, my tank was almost empty when I had the pump disconnected, and full when I hooked it back up, and that's when it felt faster... go figure

Hey- I'm not directing towards anyone specific, just so you know. I'm a cynical, cranky, skeptical pessimist, that's all!
But there are a few variables that can greatly effect the performance of your car making it slightly different nearly every time you drive it. These variables and their effects seem to be neglected when people are talking about having "felt" the gain of their recent "+3 HP" modification, when in fact, the variables of which I speak could well be having equal, or even greater, effects on performance.
Dig? I mean there have been times when I get in my car (only a Yaw carb + RB header), and I have actually pulled over to check the carb out because it "feels" fifty ponies light, and there's nothing wrong with it. Has happened on cool days, too.
Could be my imagination...I never discount that.
The other irksome thing for me regarding this is when people attempt to guess the increase by actually quantifying the power difference the sensitive nerves in their *** can feel! For example, I just typed "..."feels" fifty ponies light...".
WTF does that feel like?

thats ok. i felt the car to be a little smoother and stronger when switching from the aircleaner lid with charcoal basket to a later model smooth one. figure it seemed stupid to have that thing impeding airflow. butt dyno says its good to go, yo. hell if anything i lost 10lb. the old lids are heavy. add my airpump supercharger and i'm almost in the 10's.

for most of you guys here is something else to ponder
the air pump doesnt even blow into the cat most of the time,
it blows the air right back into the air box,
look for the other big tube on the box "not the one that goes right down to the pump,
its on the driver side"
now disconnect it and point it at your head,
wow feel that air,.

woah, have you felt the temp of the air leaving that air-pump? yowza. So I plugged the tube leaving the air-box and added a new pipe w/ panty-hose wrapped over the end and tapped up with a wire clamp on it so the airpump gets its own air from something other than the air-box... but wowza, that airpump makes a lot of noise if you don't have it routed into the exhaust. pretty warm too. surprising.
