(IGNITION) Transistor trick for 2GCDFIS.

I might need to tweak my timing a bit tomorrow, but still running strong here with about 300 miles on it. I'm pretty sure my gas mileage has gone up a bit too.

8krpm is not enough
I just wanted to check in and confirm I got my circuit yesterday. It looks GREAT, I was in awe of how well it was put together! You really are awesome, Kent! I'll keep everyone informed as to my impressions once I get a chance to get it in and put some miles on it (it's raining like cats and dogs here today, so it probably won't be until later this week at the earliest).

mine should go in this week also. What is the general consensus about timing? I remember talk of raising the timing back up after installing the transistor trick, but was this with fixed or variable PW? If this system runs both, could it mean we will get 10 degrees less timing when it shifts to fixed? I'll probably be using my timing gun alot. Ofcourse, I already run like 16 degrees initial with no detonation issues.

No, the timing does not vary between fixed and variable p/w. After the installation, my timing was retarded a bit (maybe like 6 or 8 degrees). So I re-timed it and added a few degrees additional advance. Screaming! I'm sure you guys will be happy with your systems. Like I told Kent after my first drive with the new system;

I'd just like to confirm one thing, the original '-' coil wire is not hooked up to anything right...? I think it shouldn't matter ones i disconnected the originall dizzy plug (because that's where that wire hooks up to?) I'm going to go get my 2nd gen coil right now from the junkyard (i wanted to keep the one i have now in the current config in case i need to switch back later...) can't wait to get this hooked up today or tomorrow...

Make sure you plug it into the leading ignitor otherwise you timing will be off. The factory wire you disconnect from the leading ignitor can just be ziptied back to the harness. Then plug the new connector with the long red/yellow wires attached to the leading ignitior.
If you leave the origional coils in place and the factory connector tied back to the harness then, if god forbid you have your second gen coil pack die on you, you can always have the origional ignition system as a backup.

I see a problem with your little pic Ken. It doesn't take into account the ground wire to the coil itself. That needs to be hooked up I believe. I am rewiring the ignitor into my second gen coil right now, and noticed that nothing in your setup goes to the - on the coil!!. I hope that the black wire is supposed to do that. I will have it hooked up in a few minutes and shall know. Then I will post pics of everything I have done.

Okay, I've only been awake for a couple of minutes now so bear with me here. There should already be a wire on the negative side, which enters the coil pack. That's all that goes there, so just leave it alone. The coil pack itself is grounded through the housing, so there's not actually a ground wire to be hooked up from the coil pack to the chassis. I'll go snap a pic in a second here (need coffee first)...

Alrighty, here's a pic of the connections to the coil. Basically, the only act of modification performed on the coilpack itself, is the removal of that one connector. Keep in mind also that there will be a black wire with a plug on the end which will not be used at all... You should not have to connect anything to the negative or positive posts on the coil. Just snip the one connector off and wire those up (one to positive supply and one to gizmo) and then you're all done with the coilpack.

Hmm,
Here's the link to the original instructions from Kent, just in case you did not get it. The only problem I had was that there are no clear indications of where the power hookup goes to, but put it together with the diagram I made and you should be all set.

alrighty, you were fully right. I dunno where the other wire goes on a second gen, but I unhooked it, cranked it over, nothing, hmm, maybe no spark? I check, spark! Engine was flooded, crank the throttle, turn the starter, bam, she starts. Haven't had time to mount the box, but I just tucked it and went. Wow!!! Wow again!!. Car flies, can especially tell the difference in 3rd, where the car pulled super hard in the upper rpm band where it used to start to lag. I checked the timing, didn't seem much different, but I gave it alittle extra. Hit about 90 in third in a blink and gave up for the day. Now with my lightweight flywheel and new transistor trick, she will throw your head back in first like a V8. I had alittle stumbling in second at high rpm, I may have 2 much timing or my fuel mixture might not be perfect. Didn't do it in third or first. I will play with it alittle later. I took some pics, I will post tommorrow. My green led doesn't work, but she still works perfectly.
Am I the second to get the new model installed and going?

Cool man, glad to hear you got it! Get that timing dialed in and you'll be all set. I haven't seen my green led light up yet either, but can't remember what it signifies. Kent detailed all of that in an earlier post, I'll have to take a look later when I have time. Welcome to the fast lane!

If the "other wire" that you referred to is the black wire with the plug on it coming out of the 2nd gen coil pack, then that is a referrence wire for an aftermarket tach.

Hey, guys. Glad to see it is coming along. I haven't had internet access lately. Making the final run of circuits tonight. Fly out tomorrow (cutting it close, eh?). I wonder what is up with tht green LED. They worked while testing before I shipped. Well, I guess it doesn't matter. As long as the circuit works for you.
That extra black wire on the 2nd gen coil you leave alone. It goes to the (-) terminal of the coil. You could use it to connect a tach or shift light too. I am not sure what it goes to on the 2nd gen.

IIRC our tach works off the trailing, right?
It's possible the FC's tach runs off this leading coil, and that's what the black wire's for. I'm at work, so I don't have time to go dig up a digital copy of the FC manual to find out, but I'm sure someone could.

well, i guess i'm third... i just installed it, and though i haven't driven it yet, just at idle and warmup the improvement is excellent, it's WAY smoother even at cold start, both my leds work, though when they are alternating, you can hardly tell because they are just constantly on. I'm going to go drive it right now, and let you guys know!
