(ENGINE)Removal of front engine cover while still in car

For those of you that may have a front cover leak or maybe at some time may need to just replace the oil pump.

Everything is the same removal wise up until you get to the part about removing the cover.

After you get all the front engine components off and the pulley off. Still recommend you take the precaution of depressing the clutch pedal to keep from dislodging the torrington bearings.

You need to use a hydraulic jack and position it under the transmission at the area right before the back of the oil pan. Use a piece of strong wood or a brick to support that area at the transmission with the jack.

Undo the 2 engine mount nuts and remove them. Use the jack to raise the engine until the front engine mound is clear of the mounts. Remove the 4 nuts that secure the mound to the front cover and remove the mound.

Remove the oil pan bolts that are attached to the bottom of the front cover. Then remove 2 more oil pan bolts. 1 at each side just to the rear of the engine cover. This is to give the oil pan some flexability when you remove the front cover. Remove the front cover bolts. Using the opening for the distributor gently leverage the cover forward back and forth until it comes loose. Remove cover.

You may need to drop the oil pan and replace the gasket depending on how brittle it is or if it tears when you remove the cover. I was lucky because the pan gasket was not that old. Even if you tear the gasket you could always use a good RTV gasket maker and fill the section that the bottom of the front cover attaches to.
Make sure to place some rags in the opening of the oil pan that is exposed so when you are removing any left over gasket material that no debris falls into the oil pan.
Parts list.
Front cover gasket and O'ring. Front oil seal is optional but good idea if very old.
Water pump housing to engine gasket
New oil (recommend to drain oil before removing cover)
Either save engine coolant or service. Have to remove hoses, upper and lower to remove water pump housing. I removed the radiator to simplify the whole procedure and gain better access to the front engine area.
Good time to replace the cooling hoses and belts if they are old.
Oil pan gasket may be a good idea to have just in case it tears and you are not comfortable about using RTV to seal the bottom area where the cover meets.
Installation of course is the reversal of install.
