(ELECTRICAL) Car died & won't start, my tach is not working - car is 84/85,

Ok hopefully you arrived here because of a search, or better, a link from the FAQ.

If your car (symptoms):

1) Is an '84 or '85.
1) Dies after running or won't start and
2) The tach needle does not move at all while you are cranking or you noticed it wasn't working in the moments before your car died and
3) You notice that WHILE CRANKING there is no fuel coming out of the hose that goes into the carburetor

Probable cause:

Your trailing ignitor is probably dead or the wire that feeds signal to the tach and the fuel pump cut relay has a faulty connection.

Resolution: replace ignitor or get faulty connection resolved.

Refer to http://www.wankel.net/~krwright/files/manuals/1985_RX7_FSM/85RX7(50)Wiring_Diagrams.pdf

page 14 for the applicable diagram.

Here's, however, a free snapshot of the applicable section of that page:

Thanks. That was my way to celebrate post #3000. 3 years, 3,000 posts, 3 engines gone thru, perfect symetry.

Not sure if the same exact data applies to the 13B engine. Might be different. Feel free to contribute with that data if you have it.

Also, naturally the alternate resolution to get the car going on an immediate basis is to jump the fuel pump cut relay, so the lack of signal from the trailing ignitor does not affect the operation of the fuel pump. That is more of an emergency resolution if you absolutely, positively have to drive your 7 because you're addict to it, and there is no spare ignitors in sight.

Here's the link to the thread that covers the location of the fuel pump cut relay and how to bypass it. https://www.rx7club.com/1st-gen-archive-71/fuel-84-85-fuel-pump-relay-trick-597949/

It is my opinion that if you are going to own a 7 then you should either mount spare ignitors on your distributor or keep them in the glove box at all times.lol
