Will RX8 6-speed bolt up to 93rx7

My car is being temporarily put together with stock motor(Was waiting on 2jz swap) while my mechanic acquires a new shop. He doesnt have an rx7 5speed tranny atm, but he has a rx8 6speed lying around. Will this bolt up? If not Whats mods are Necessary?

It's in the FAQ!!
https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generation-specific-1993-2002-16/faq-3rd-gen-other-useful-links-68640/

21) Is a 6 speed transmission an option?

There are no drop-in 6 speed transmission options for the FD. However, it should be known that 6 speed transmissions are becoming popular with new cars to improve highway fuel economy, not performance. An RX-8 6-speed transmission will not bolt up directly and is not designed for the torque of a modified or even stock FD. Because of the cost, limited advantages, and the fact that the stock gearbox generally works well, 6-speed upgrades remain uncommon. Differential final drive ratio and lower-ratio 5th gear are more practical drivetrain mods.

the fix for the 6spd can be had @ 7's Only Racing.

The tranny bolts to the motor - You'd use a TII flywheel and clutch with an RX-8 starter - but it won't line up with the shifter - that's the big problem. Then there's always teh driveshaft and the PPF and such. Yes it bolts up, no it won't work if you want to keep your interior or modify the trans...

This picture was taken by me at Rotorstock4 in Santa Pod this year.

I don't know what they did to fit the gearbox in, but as you can see the gear **** sits a lot closer to the firewall now.
I asked the owner of the car, and he told me that the RX8 gearbox is stronger than the RX7's.
His car wasn't just a street car, but a stripped out drag machine, so I'd say that he knew his way around cars, but the comment about the RX8 gearbox surprised me.

That guy is smoking crack! The RX7 tranny is WAY stronger. The RX8 tranny is just a miata tranny it’s weak as crap it barely holds the rx-8. He probably just has the RX8 shift **** on it.

Either way it is a bad decision and does not bolt in. 1-2 gears are closer then the rx7 tranny and 6th is about the same as 5th so basically you just move one and 2 closer and why would you want to do this on a turbo car?

Mazda plans to bring the new Miata with the 2.3 turbocharged engine from the MPS range. This has a 6-speed too, Having 260hp as a standard and higher torque, it miught cope better with the FD's power output... fitting would still be another issue

The rx8 trans cannot hold up to the rx8 6 port output of about 190-200whp and 150-160wtq. Now add 25-50% to those numbers which is the output of most mildly modded FD's and what do you think will happen?

I love how everyone ranks on the FE gearbox when they've never driven one or more importantly - thought about WHEN they actually break.

So how much torque do they handle then? What do the boosted renesis powerplants have bolted to them?

I have no idea how much torque they can handle before they explode, but I can tell you that every person that I've spoken to that blew up that box has done it while there was absolutely no power applied to the transmission. From what I've been told by two different shops that use this box extensively in road racing is that the internal tolerances are absolutely horrible. During hard shifting it allows the internals to literall come apart and a detent ball gets released into the gears and then BOOM! It's not like these things are splitting cases while in gear and accelerating.

Case #1 - Stock box in a 13B-RE running time attack, not one problem
Case #2 - (most likely that FD above) Stock box running 9's, not one failure.
Case #3 - PR - 600RWHP 20B RX8. Modified the second gear and they've only had one failure I believe.

Any tranny will die a quick and painful death if abused or not shifted properly.

if you really want a 6 speed tranny, save your money, saves some more, the go buy a HKS sequential 6 speed. problem solved.

Those sound like higher torque applications.

I'd like to tear down an RX-8 tranny - you can get a lot of insight into the torque capacity by simply looking at the size of the gear teeth and bearing spans.

Your technical knowledge obviously surpaces mine however I will have one very soon. Just need to figure out shipping or I need to drive to Niagra Falls. Apparently it's slightly disassembled so I should be able to snap a few pics for your viewing pleasure. However, it still doesn't solve the shifter in the dash problem. Relocating is easy enough, it's the reverse lock-out that keeps me awake at night scratching my head......
